Disco 3 tow bar

My dealer quoted £550.00 to supply and fit a Disco 3 slot in tow bar and single electrics. This seems very expensive are there cheaper options throught non-landrover tow bar specialists?

Buy the parts and do it yourself? Wink

Seriously, it's probably too early for a third party tow bar and wiring set, so why not look at the fitting instructions on the GTR site (download and print the pdf) and if you think you can do it, start looking on ebay for a cheap bar and wiring (seem to be pretty common at around £200).

The installation cost sounds a lot.

There have been plenty selling on eBay for around £225 (detachable towball plus the twin electrics).

If you look on the LR Owners' site (you need to register - not to be confused with the GTR site where you need to pay) then navigate to the D3 accessories section and you'll find the basic installation schematics for the electrics.

In essence it looks a simple job. You need to remove the boot access panel (behind the rear near side light cluster). Behind the lights you will find the wiring with terminated connector. The towbar electrics connect here, and the schematics show how to feed these through to the outside of your car. It's pretty easy and non-mechanical!

As far as I'm aware, there are no non- LR towbars available.

According to my price list I have, the standard workshop and parts prices should be as follows:

Quick release tow bar KNB500011 £165 + £28.88 VAT = £193.88
Quick release tow bar stowage WVO 500020 £40 +£7 VAT = £47
'N & S' type electrics YWJ500201 £95 + 1hr labour (£85 +VAT) = total £211.50

Hence the dealer quoted price (pre discount!) should be £405.38, plus and extra £47 if you want the tow ball storage bracket.

Look on the older threads for discussions about the towbar storage if required.

Hope this helps

KL - what price have you got on your list for the Multi-height tow bar - VUB501430? I assume the electrics are the same for this.

KL what date is your price list ?
In my Oct 04 retail price book the price for the KNB500011 is £210 + vat total £ 246.75 BUT Just called my dealer to check and the price is now £295 + VAT (supply).
Same price for the multi ht towbar (supply). The stowage has also gone up - £50+VAT.
Ebay is a much cheaper option for the parts and they are not difficult to fit.

Price I have for the multi height tow ball VUB501430 is £210 net plus 1/2 hr labour & VAT to give total of £296.69
As far as I know, the electrics are the same.
[There is also something called "13 pin electrics" YWJ500210 £65 net or £76.38 total. I don't know the difference between this and the "N&S type"]

My price spreadsheet was from a dealer in the summer - apparently the one used by the service department to calculate labour standard times for each job etc.

I can quite believe that LR have 'updated' the standard parts price list since then, and that your later prices are correct.

As for eBay, it seems difficult to find any bargains there any more! Still marginally cheaper than dealer most of the time, but not always.

From other threads, some posters have suggested routinely being able to negotiate 25% discount on standard LR prices for parts. Not something I've tried yet myself, although I'm sure there's a fair amount of 'give' if you know who to ask.

Some dealers (such as one in Cornwall recently) have been offering certain parts at a fair discount on eBay "Buy it Now". These have been for items such as light guards and roof rails. It might be worth talking to them and see what they have. Look through some of the recent threads here for further info.

I raised the thought of doing a group buy in a recent thread- I'm sure that dealers would be willing to stretch themselves on price if guaranteed a fair volume of business.

Caveat emptor on eBay- make sure you know what you are buying, as there's little comeback if wrong. In particular check the part numbers of the bits you are buying. I would check with your local dealer which of the electrical wiring parts is the one you require, and ensure that the eBay vendor has the correct one!

Let us know how you get on.

John,

Sounds straighforward, I will buy the parts and install myself.

I assume you simply remove the panels and then feed the wiring down to the socket mounting positions.

David,

One additional thing to consider is that to complete the installation I believe there is some reprogramming to the suspension height control. I'm sure BN knows all about this. (have read in a previous thread). Self fit seems the cheapest option though. I wonder what the dealer would charge just for the reprogramming? Shocked

Dealer needs to tell the system that they're fitted so your D3 doesn't do it's suspension tricks when you've got a trailer hooked up. Should only take a few minutes and (as far as I'm concerned and my dealer didn't try to charge) it should be free, you'd do it yourself if you could, it's not your fault they buried the setting in software only a dealer can access. I've not heard of any dealers trying to charge yet.
The only awkward bit of fitting is feeding the wiring up behind the vibration damper weight, unless you have access to a ramp
