Fixing a roof tent to a Prospeed roof rack.

I've recently purchased a roof tent which I'm looking to fit onto a Prospeed MK2 roof rack and curious as to how others have done so?

Under the tent, there are 2 strips of aluminium extrusion running front to rear and within these strips, there are sliding plates which hold M8 bolts with the thread facing downwards towards the roof of the vehicle. The most simple solution seems to be to simply use some U-shaped brackets which go under the rails on the rack and bolt up to the aluminium extrusion but there is no space to get your hand in there to tighten them up. Any suggestions?

If anyone knows the diameter of the tube used on Prospeed racks, that would be very helpful to source the correct size U-clamps? I'm not near to the vehicle to measure it myself

Hopefully some pictures from Google will show what I mean and thanks in advance, Harry

Going through this myself. I have decided to have a custom mount fabricated - no drawings yet though.

Thanks NC500, I'll be interested to see what you come up with in due course!

Prospeed have specific XRS bars for mounting a RT to the rack.
Spoke to Ben on Sat & they have a couple of sets left on the shelf.

There’s a cup which bolts to the outer bosses on the rack, bar then sits in the cup & bolts in at the ends, simple system which means you can leave bars attached to RT.

I used some 25mm stage light U brackets by Doughty Engineering (rated to 150kg), there’s a place in Spennymoor that can supply & post out, however my latest RT’s mounting rails (welded on & part of the frame) sat on the cups, had to get inventive & had some offset saddle clamps made which worked a treat.

Thank you 1967 Jester, I've ordered a set of those clamps so will have a go at nailing the tent on next week! I forgot that there's a set of Prospeed XRS bars in the garage, with those and the saddle clamps it should all work nicely Thumbs Up

I may try later to mount the tent to the rack, losing the additional bars to reduce overall height but that looks a bit more complicated. I think the only way to achieve this would be to fit the tent to the rack, then lift the pair onto the roof of the D4 with a forklift but it wouldn't be possible to do this on the vehicle, given the space between the bottom of the tent and the roof of the car doesn't allow space to reach the fixings with a spanner.
