Anyone doing engine swaps/conversions??

I’m sure I’ve seen a mention or two on another forum about swapping in the Jag V8 into diesel D3. Anyone heard of this or have any experience?

We all know about the snappy cranks on the TDV6. But for me it is the lack of performance from the 2.7 compared to other engines Land Rover used in the other models.

Being in the U.K. there is simply loads of choice of 2.7 TDV6’s auto or manual. But factory 4.4 V8’s are rare and usually silly money for the mileage & condition.

Jag V8 engines can be bought really cheap from a breakers these days. Anyone know how easy it would be to convert a 2.7?

Along a similar thought pattern. Anyone done the same with the TDV8? The L320 RRS got the 3.6, so I assume it must fit the engine bay.

I don’t hate or dislike the 2.7. I’ve driven both auto and manual and been in a remapped one. But 170’ish bhp and 11.9 sec 0-60mph feels like a downgrade from my 214hp V8 Range Rover.

Why not decat the 2.7 and have it remapped with a larger intercooler? You’d be surprised at the difference Whistle

Have been in a remapped 2.7. Not knocking it, but power is still way below a standard 3.6 TDV8 or 4.4 petrol. And you can mod both of those too.

Plus you still have the snappy crank hanging over you.

The price of D3s in UK being what they are, I’d assume one could buy another one every time one has issues with the engine Whistle Laughing

Don’t think the crank snapping is a 2.7 liter feature? Didn’t they have issues with a weak oil pump instead?

If your primary focus is power then why not look for 5 litre RRS - I drove one last week and my vertebrae are still recovering!

Currently off the road, as it had a water leak and soaked carpets. In the middle of new carpets being fitted

It was on the road for 3 years, running perfectly at 305bhp and 740Nm Thumbs Up

Crank snapping is certainly an issue. But there are loads of 2.7’s with 200,000+ miles on them. I think the 3.0 is more prone. But lots of conflicting info. Yes other issues too. Although most engines from most car makers have something.

The RRS is on the list. I do like the Disco 3 shape and 7 seat option. A real shame the 3.6 was never offered. The 4.4 V8 is fine, but only one on Autotrader currently, so very limited choice and seems expensive given mileage and condition.

Don’t understand why anyone would pay the D4 Jap import prices. I had a look previously £24-30k!!!! Is anyone actually buying at that money given a newer better spec RRS can be had for £10-12k.

The RRS is not a D4 though.

There’s still not a direct replacement for the D4 on the market. As such a V8 D4 with low mileage etc. will appeal to a niche market who don’t want to compromise on the practicality and versatility of a D4 and can afford to both buy it and run it.
