Crank Snapping Question
2005 2.7 TDV6, 144,000 miles. Is there a danger zone for this to happen or like a threshold?

I thought the D3 2.7 had a bigger chance of having a catastrophic oil pump failure for certain model years and the D4 3.0 had a bigger chance of snapping the crank. I doubt anyone can state the probability with any kind of statistical significance.

First time owner and bought as a project. Didn't really know much so that's more info. Always fancied a disco and heard they were problematic but fancied learning a bit and getting my hands dirty. Any info is good info.

Welcome to the mad house.
Check when the belts etc were changed and that the oil pump is the upgraded version.
If in doubt change all. New Defender L663 110 SE (known as Noddy!)

I may be wrong (it has been known, it was a Tuesday and raining) but D3 engines go pop from spun bearings rather than cranks snapping. Been there, got the oily t-shirt.

Oil pump change at (or every) 100k miles and move oil grade to 5w/40 with oil change every 6k miles.
New cam chains and tensioners at 150k miles and again at 300k.

Thanks for the heads up on the oil pump, belts etc. Is the haynes manual worth it? Or is there a better reference source?

Not really.
If it’s going to snap a crank then it will snap.
If it’s going to spin a bearing, it’s going to spin it.
Is there any early warning signs for spun bearing or fault codes to watch out for?
Despite regular (5000 miles) Oil changes, Cambelt etc. including Oil and water pump replacement 12K miles previously, my 2008, TDV6, HSE decided to throw a conrod through the block without warning on the M40 on a wet Sunday night after driving through France for 350 miles to the Midlands in the UK. Was doing around 70 mph and the engine just cut out with the warning lights on the dash lit up like a Christmas tree. Coasted on to the hard shoulder and had it recovered 3 hours later to my destination. The garage posted me a photo later showing a hole in the side of the block with just the small end of the conrod-minus the piston poking through. A quick Post Mortem showed no Oil Pump or Cambelt problems with everything in place and intact, including the Crankshaft.
Many, many years ago, I had an Austin A35 which developed a knock and horrible rattle in Shrewsbury, I drove it home to Birmingham (50 miles), took the engine out, removed the sump and found that the crank had broke on an angle at the web on no. 1 big end. Main bearings were not too bad so got a reground crank and bearings, gave the engine a good clean out and the car did over 30K miles when I sold it and was still on the road for a few years later.Relocated to Mid France from N. Unfortunalty no.
Oil changed every 4k had no issues at all, pulled onto dual carrigeway went to accelrate away and lost all power no noise no warning lights.

Reading from various articles I can find plenty of horror stories and discussions on this topic. The only stats I can find was on the website "https://www.4x4community.co.za/forum/showthread.php/248591-Preliminary-Investigation-into-TDV6-Crank-Failures"
Where the stats say : "engine failure rate of LR as reported by Warranty direct in the UK is 1 in 77 which is better than both BMW and Audi."
Due to this I wonder if the issue is as prevalent as it seems or its publicity due to the severity has amplified the occurance.
The site also references polls on this forum.
What is the general feeling on odds of failure from more experienced owners?

Absolutely none for mine. I had just pulled away from a junction in NW Norway, made the mistake of thinking “she’s running the best she ever has” and a couple of km later heard flap-flap-flap noise from the front like trim coming off. All the rest is history and she was scrapped a couple of thousand miles from home.
No warning lights, no change in driving, not even fault codes, just the flapping noise, then the engine sounding like a bag of spanners. Then she was history. Shame as my trusty D3 had taken me on many adventures, in 20 countries on 2 continents, it was an emotional wrench but even on her last drive she’d looked after me and got me to a safe lay-by to wait on the recovery truck.
Best advice is don’t worry about the odds, just enjoy the car. But make sure you have breakdown cover, wherever you are.

Mines fine, it’s only had 3 engines in 101,000 miles
Just kidding.D3 owned from new, P017 brake recall, BAS FBHIC, new FBH, LR013487 oil pump, new water pump. RRS front lower suspension arms. New suspension compressor/ relay. New Denso alternator. CuNifer rear brake pipes. New GKN rear propshaft. New HPFP belt & tensioner. New A/C Condenser.NO WARRANTY for many many years.
