[Wanted] - Disco 2, 3 or 4

Hi all, this is my second only post and am a brand new member currently without a Disco (but do have a modified 1964 Series 2) but very much in the market for one. I’m open to the right vehicle be it a 2, 3, or 4. I want to get it ready for greenlaning and off grid camping with roof tent etc. I’m not bothered by high spec as I want (don’t we all) a reliable fault free, relatively low hassle, car. Tax is an issue though so don’t want to spend more than £450 per year on that so the model is important on that front. I’m new to the wonderful world of Discos so any advice and pointers hugely welcome.

I hope it’s ok to ask for advice about ones I spot to get a learned perspective on ads. Where is the best place here to ask that?

Thanks in advance and happy motoring.

YS

Hi

Would first start off by deciding what ur budget is plse , then what engine be it petrol or diesel , if u go for the later 3/4 a scanner , multimeter and charger is very useful to have as part of ur tool kit

Other expenses are of course if u will be doing all the work yourself or having to rely on garages

Can only personally speak about the D3/4’s , they will wear out quicker being heavy brakes , wishbone bushes etc so have to factor in those expenses, along with timing belts every 7 x years ( diesel )

Would buy one from other forum member as then at least u know it’s been looked after , with it being a Land Rover and full of electronics it won’t always be fault free , another reason to get a scanner , the gap iid is the best which are around £460 but pay for themselves very quickly

There’s of course crank issues in diesel models, they are extremely nice to drive , plenty of room but do need looking after one way or another , hope that helps a little

If you want to pay less than £450 a year tax your options are a Discovery 3 registered before March 2006 or a Discovery 4 Commercial (which has front seats only) although aftermarket rear seat conversions are available.

Go into this with your eyes wide open. You can't run and maintain these beasties on the 'cheap'. Whilst these is much you can do at home if your a good mechanic it can get very expensive very quickly if you get a wrong un.

As for road tax, bear in mind the cheaper tax cars are now between 18-20 years old.

Having said that, get a good one and look after it and they are the best car LR has built. Thumbs Up

Good call ^^

Must confess I was surprised at the price for one that’s done nearly 200k

As a side note any that are fitted with sidesteps would check the sills for rust as they can become a water traps

2005 Discovery 3 TDV6 SE Auto Tonga GreenDiscovery 3

Will be selling this soon. 94k, full history with a lot of recent engine maintenance including glow plugs and gaskets known to leak! Being a GS it’s fairly basic, but mechanically it’s very good and drives well. Gearbox is mint and drives spot on. No advisories. Not sure which wheels it will be on yet, but they will be in very good condition with good even wear premium tyres.

Hi Jimbob42, thanks for the post. Have the belts been replaced recently? Got some more pics? How much do you want for it?
