Excessive Oil Consumption (SOLVED)

Hi,

Any help with diagnosing excessive oil consumption on 2.7 would be gratefully received. I’m currently doing top mark of the dipstick to the bottom in 300ish miles, below is what I know so far:-

Starts from cold or after being stationary for a hour with a large puff of blue/white smoke. There is no smoke otherwise in normal driving and it clear pretty much instantly after starting.

Passenger side (turbo side) intercooler hose is wet but not excessive.

Drained around half a mug of oil from the drivers side hose and the chamber before the inlet manifold.

The crankcase oil vapour return just before the turbo has oil present but nothing concerning.

Oil separator is the later EU4 type, the front tubes to the crankcase are seated but loose in the grommets, unable to stop these working loose. Read a post about the separator being loose causing issues but I would expect the vapour line to be saturated?

Removing the oil cap and dipstick when up to temp and there is no blow by present.

Haven’t long brought the car and would like to try and diagnose and fix.

Gut feeling is rings are ok and it’s not blow-by, are valve stems seal a thing on modern cars and would they account for that amount of oil loss? I’m thinking change PCV and if that doesn’t work change the turbo… your thoughts would most welcome.

Cheers!

SOLVED!

My issue turned out to be oil separator related. Replaced the separator valve and the seals into the crankcase. The valve wasn't seated correctly in the block, one of the tabs from the oil cooler gasket was bent down preventing the valve from sitting in the block correctly. I suspect with no pressure from the crankcase acting on the valve the draw from the turbo inlet was syphoning oil from the part of the valve that should have been returning oil to the sump. Done a 1000 odd miles now and now smoke on start up and no oil loss.

Symptoms point to turbo.
Go to rear of Disco and run a finger into the exhausts - see if the exhaust is black and oily.

My Friend had exactly the same symptoms a few years ago, Puff on start up but otherwise seemed clear while driving and using the amount of oil that you're using. He was advised likely turbo so had it changed and problem still existed. Oil separator was the cause in the end.

I would change the cheaper part first, I believe the oil separator is very tricky to get out but it is do-able.
