HELP: Discovery 3 Won't srtart
I bought a 2005 discovery 3 TDV6 5 (195000) weeks ago, super happy with the purchase (great service history, lots of work done, fresh belts etc). Started first time when testing it but upon getting home, after sitting for a few days it took a few gos to start it, always started eventually though. Fast forward to 2 days ago and was driving low revs in town and the engine dies completly. Won't start at all now.
Recovered to a land rover specialist garage and they have taken a look and suggested it needs a new engine for the following reasons:
- no fault codes (just U0100 code)
- fuel pressure fine
- belts all fine
- oil pump fine
I'm beyond gutted at this point, looking for advice on A) things that could be checked. B) if I need a new engine best way to go about that.
Thanks in advance, let me know if any more information would be useful

Very strange, I'm no electrician but is the battery ok?
That code usually refers to the Power control module and/or the Engine control module.
You need to make sure there is no fault with the wiring with these modules.
Might need the services of an Auto electrician?

Battery is brand new and so is alternator. Garage (LR specialist) seemed to suggest that this code comes up all the time and nothing to worry about

They basically said they don't know what is wrong but suspect it is something internal in the engine and reccomend a new engine

SOme additional info, it has had a brand new alternator and battery just prior to purchase.
Just before the engine cut out a "Special programs off" message popped up

Does the engine turn over with a socket and bar on the crankshaft ?

Could it be the Earth connection? Worth checking. They do corrode sometimes. You could try a heavy duty jump lead as a temporary check.Gary

Thanks will check earth connection tomorrow. But wouldn't that mean all the electronics would be out or not necessarily?

The above is not a valid reason for engine replacement and is not even a diagnosis of what has occurred. As others have already suggested, an electrical issue seems to be likely given the details you have been able to provide. Chief suspect might well be the alternator and especially if an aftermarket brand has been fitted. An original Denso alternator should have been fitted otherwise major electrical problems can and do occur.
Ask the garage specifically what has failed in the engine to justify their opinion for a replacement.
If it's crank, T/belt, cam chains, piston, etc they might have a valid argument depending on the consequent damage of one or more of these components failing.
If none of these have failed there is no reason yet provided by them to condemn your engine yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ

Thanks for your reply, it was an denso alternator that was fitted. They basically said they had checked X,Y,Z and couldn't find a problem so it would probably be something internal to the engine. The justification for that being that there was no code other than the U0100 code. I will phone them again tomorrow and verify what exactly they checked but from what I understand it was fule pressure, belts, they retimed the engine and 'rear belts' not sure what exactly that last one means.
Other pieces of information that might be relevant. THe battery was replaced with an Exide Premium Carbon Boost EA1000 12V 100Ah 900A Starter Battery
Ok, I think my course of action is to find another garage for a second opinion, specifying eactly what these guys checked

Re-timed? The timing was either correct when they checked it or it wasn't. If the latter is true then something major has caused the timing to slip from it's set position and this could have dire consequences depending on the extent.
This would be a very different scenario to the "reason" for a replacement you posted earlier!yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ

Unless there was a significant noise when it just stopped running from "low revs" it would indicate nothing major mechanical has failed. A crank will not fail quietely and the other main reason for a whole engine change which is slipped bearings will still allow the engine to turn over or even run.
It won't turn easily on the front pulley (its a diesel for a start) but it should turn smoothly.
The "rear belt" timing is the high pressure fuel pump. The 2.7TDV6 doesn't need timing but the 3.0SDV6 does so not sure what they are suggesting. Sorry if I have missed it but does it attempt to turn over now? Previously when it was reluctant to start, how? Did it spin over but no fire or something else When it did fire up was it sluggish to get up to idle or just pick up as normal?A visitor from the dark side, my other vehicle is an is still an EV. Strictly speaking its SWMBO.

OK so some updates from the garage:
When they said they retimed it what they meant was they removed the timing belt to check it had been timed correctly (which it had)
The camshaft turns over
The high pressure pump berlt was checked and deemed OK
When it was reluctant to start before it turned over but didn't fire. Then when it did fire it was a bit sluggish before running smoothly again
