New to me D4 - clunk from drivers side wheel area

Another issues with the new to me D4. Was absolutely fine when i test drive it but its now developed a single clunk noise from the drivers wheel when tuning, mostly to the right. The car has had both upper and lower arms replaced at the start of the month and a quick look under the car confirms they are new so the paper work i got with it is correct.

However i noticed the drop links look (well feel) like they may not have been replaced. could it be them that's now gone? since i got it I've had it off road a little on Sunday down a muddy track and had the suspension in off road hight. noticed it start to make that noise after that so i think rising it up caused the issue as before that it was fine.

Again not had a proper look yet but will at the weekend, but be nice to know if anyone has any ideas what it may be so I can check it and worst case run down to Advanced factors in soton if I need to get anything.

Agree as I'm not 100% sure. It sounds like it's coming from the drivers side and can feel it though the floor. Sounds like something is moving. Car has mea to have had new arms uppers and lowers fitted and they look new. So I don't think it's them. The arb links I have not looked at yet but feeling behind the wheel they feel old. I.e. rusty. Clonk seems to happen when the body rolls. One way then back the other. I.e will clonk on turning right then again when straightening up again.

It's like something moves when turning then pops back.

Need to get it checked by a local indie as it could be many things as said above, if it seem to be coming from the steering rack it could be the lower steering column (common fault) if it is this then only use a genuine LR replacement as others have had issues with pattern parts..
 I want to see the sweets before I get into your windowless van... I'm not stupid!

So an update to this, does not look to be the steering Colom. I thought it was the anti roll bar links and or bushes. so ive replaced them all this morning and the noise is still there.

Hard to describe, if I turn right, then i hear a knock as if something moved, I can feel it in the floor under my feet. when the body levels back, it knocks back into place. i.e. seems to be related to body roll or turning right only. turning left does not cause the noise.

When it was up on the ramp today, i tried to shake the wheels, and nothing felt lose. ARB bushes and links are now all brand new (old ones looked fine and felt tight still) I cant see anything else that could cause it. it has new upper and lower arms on the front as well. im stumped!

My personal experience of what you are describing is the early signs of the driveshafts starting to fail. Mine lasted about 140k miles before the drivers side began to emanate a mild ‘clonk’ when engaging drive and when coming on and off power. The noise was imperceptible to others at first but being so aware of any impending failures, I noticed it.

I had both sides changed and all was well.

IT could be that, but surely it would be more then a single clunk and more a constant clicking if the CV joint on the drive shaft was going?

Not disagreeing with you, as im stumped but just trying to get my head round how it could fail and give a single clunk.

I'm sorry this won't help, but I had the same on my old D3 and I changed everything and never found it, all 4 front arms, both front drive shafts, ARB bushes, drop links, track rod ends, disks and pads, bearings. In the end I gave up and just lived with it as there weren't any other problems or symptoms.

No, it doesn’t make a ticking sound or necessarily have to be on full lock etc. my money is on the inner CV joint on the right hand driveshaft.
