Fit awning to roof rails

Hi folks, I have a 2m awning off my old D2. I have the short roof rails on my D3 but no cross bars and the rack that came with it is a pile of scrap 😡. Anyway, I thought perhaps I could bolt the brackets straight onto the roof rails and I have a "foot" off the old rack that would fill the gap due to lower rail fittings at the front ( or possibly by the extended rail). I would shorten the L brackets so they don't protrude over the roof much and also use 3 or 4 instead of the supplied pair. The awning is not free standing so there isn't going to be much rotational force on the roof rail. I was thinking of some sort of rubber cushion between the bracket and rail to tighten down on possibly resting on the roof a little each side of the rail. Any thoughts?
Thanks Gareth
