Thank God for IIDTools!
My MY10 LR4 developed a issue where the fuel gauge shows empty and I get low fuel messages despite having a full tank.
My garage said it was a fuel sender issue which would need replacing, but as it had been mainly working with only the occasional missing fuel level I'd been waiting for it to become more permanent before getting it sorted - given it's a "drop the tank" operation so 4 or 5 hours of labour (on top of just having had the suspension compressor replaced).
Incidentally, my IID shows no faults relating to fuel
My garage also told me that at some point the engine management system might decide the car had run out of fuel and decide to shut down, but that I probably had a couple of thousand miles before that might happen.
It was then, with some trepidation that I set out for Edinburgh (from Surrey) 2 weeks ago on an unplanned trip for a family bereavement. And as luck would have it as we set off the fuel gauge decided to stop working. With a careful eye on the mileage and premptive fuel stops, we got to Scotland OK without a problem, although I was expecting the car to stop all the time.
On the way back yesterday, just before the M6/M62 junction, the inevitable happened. The engine started juddering like it was running out of fuel (although I had half a tank) and finally died. I managed to restart but after just a few yards it would die again.
Having pulled over, hazards on and family safely behind the barrier, I stuck the IIDTool in and yep, 3 fuel related faults were showing.
OK I thought, perhaps I can clear them, but there was one that just wouldn't clear and the car wasn't going anywhere. And all this with mother-in-law, wife and 3 year old standing just off the hard shoulder in the rain, and no (foolishly) breakdown cover!
Then I had a brainwave - if the engine management system has been counting miles since the fuel sender packed up maybe I could do a vehicle reset and it would clear the count allowing me to get home. So again with a quick prayer I ran the routine and everything cleared. The engine restarted, and we were able to get the remaining 220 odd miles home without further incident!
Bizarrely, the fuel gauge behaved impeccably the whole way, even with 3 further stops for coffee and diesel. I would have thought that if there was a fuel sender fault it would still be there despite the hard reboot?
Anyway IIDTool saved the day - well worth every penny! and now I will get the car booked in for a permanent fix.http://www.disco3.co.uk/gallery/albums/use...100x28.gif
No its a common fault on the D4's I have done a few of them, its pathetic really what you have to change in the tank to fix it, again LR using sub standard parts.

Mine has been doing this intermittently so I have it booked in and warranty direct informed. Bit worried they wont cover it as there are no fault codes logged with the failure.

If it does anything to dash readout (needle down then up on restart) take a vid, gives evidence that it's playing up.

The sender going wrong is not the end of the world, but whoever decided to use the sender info to tell the engine to shut itself down needs probing!
Surely if the car can see fuel pressure it knows its getting fuel so should keep running?

Hello,
I have a similar issue where the fuel gauge has been inoperable for a while. My car is now stalling due to the issue and cannot be driven without the stop/start routine.
I have an IID tool with bluetooth (ELMINO), but want to reset the car, but not quite sure how to do it. Do I have to download a specific app or program ?
I would be most grateful for any advice anyone can give.

Blimey! This reminds me of the time my MY10 Jag XF kept saying it was empty (all of a sudden) and go into restricted mode. The fix, as you can see here was to gain access to the top of the diesel tank under the rear seat, rotate the clamp-off, then access the sensors loom in the tank, unclip the connector & use a mini file to rub the contacts in the connector & reassemble. (This was an JLR engineers fix I found on the Jag forums) That worked 100% until I PX'd the Jag with my Disco 4 a year later. Fingers chuffing-crossed this wont happen on my D4!

I wish the top of the fuel tank and the sensors was that easily accessible on the D4!
I now need to get the car to a local garage and am hoping to reset the (1000) miles counter so I can drive it there safely. I require guidance on how to do the vehicle reset using the IID tool. I attach a picture of the tool I have.

That's not a GAP IID tool, that looks like a cheap ELM327 dongle - completely different hardware i'd imagine - certainly never going to work with GAP's software.
Google gap diagnostics for their tool and software.
