Wheel rim wear

I have had a slow puncture for weeks now and it was starting to get annoying so finished early yesterday and went to get it sorted. Into the big bath no bubbles nothing obvious. Tyre removed small nail through the middle happy days easy repair. But NO ! The inside of the inner rim was worn in quite sharp grooves by the tyre bead. The manager very experienced said he has only seen it on Volvo XC 90's and didn't know the cause.
I run permanent full weight ie 3260Kgs rotate the wheels regularly corner to corner and across the car in between so I can only assume all the wheels will have the same damage. I run 48psi in the rears and 42psi in the front ie 5 psi above the heavy load on the tpms tyres are Pirelli AT+ very good tyres all round.
Anyone any ideas whats chewing the inside of the rims up ??
Also if anyone knows where to get more Pirelli AT+ 19's from would be great to hear from you as I had the last ones from Kwick Fit mid last year.

Thanks for the link, interesting reading. Poss an AT tyre problem by the looks of it I'm guessing softer sidewalls and things moving around more than a dedicated road tyre.
Looks like I will be looking for a set of wheels as well as new tyres later this year.

1st I've heard of with Pirelli's, issue is usually associated with GGAT.

I've had it happen with Scorpion Zeros, BFG AT and MT tyres on a micture of 17, 18 and 20" rims - all of which were used extensively off road.

One failure to date - a BFG AT popped off an original 17" rim whilst driving through a motorway contraflow whilst towing a trailer. Somewhat sub-optimal to put it mildly

I have a 'significant' collection of spare wheels/tyre sets as a result, and will shortly be adding to these as we have just bought another D4 to replace the D3 which is now on 293k - consequently my spare 18" rims are no longer required.

Thought my pile in the shed was growing 🤣🤣🤣

As said, many comments re GG’s over the years though ‘most’ were 3-4 years back, dodgy batch maybe 🤔
Never had issues with mine & also used significantly off tarmac.
I’ll have a set of 6 19’s coming up soon, ran them permanently on the D4 with Duratracs on.

42/48psi? That seems to be somewhat excessive. Why such high pressures?

As for the Pirelli AT+, Pirelli have stopped supplying it to the UK in LR-suitable sizes. You can probably import it from somewhere in Europe but at what cost? Shame, as I liked them on my RRS.

As another one with a growing pile of old alloy wheels from various vehicles (most complete with old tyres) that are realistically never going to be used again... How does one get rid of them? I'm guessing Council recycling won't take anything that still has a tyre on it, but would take the wheel?

Had similar issue recently in Inverness. Couldn’t give the wheels away so had to pay to take the tyres off, then going to get the rims weighed in at a scrapyard, £1/kg.

Don't know if it applies to all tyres but I thought tyres should not be swapped such that direction of rotation is changed, so if doing corner to corner, you should get them flipped on the wheel.

Can't do that with mine as they have an inside/outside design.

Worrying Update On Rim Wear

A slightly worrying update on the rim wear issues I am having at the moment.
I arrived back into the yard Thursday night and found that the tyre that had had the puncture 3 weeks ago was flat, mmmm. Inflated it could hear air escaping but could not see nail screw etc. Wheel off the car the air was leaking round the rear rim. Once the bead was broken the new rim fitted literally 3 weeks ago was worn and damaged, tyre is now knackered.
I have emailed Pirelli to see if they have an answer, I have spoken to AJS Tyres as they deal with Land Rovers 24/7 and they have seen the problem but have never grounded out an answer.

Could it be the combination of permanent full weight ( not sure if you mean you tow or just have the car fully loaded), plus the very high tyre pressures you're running causing the issues?

I had a wheel wear out like this on a D3 about 10 years ago , tyre looked OK and running at Normal pressures , not full load. It put a saw through it before scraped it to stop it being used , as it was so thin.
I think there might be a thread on this from years ago. https://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/wheel-rim-w...wheel+wear
