It’s built in hard drive to update you get the latest map available you can on a usb stick insert into the centre console usb port and follow the on screen instructions then go for a very long drive probaly about 3 hrs , do not turn the engine off while loading as it will go wrong and you will be screwed
Personally use waze or google maps much better D3 in Buckingham blue now SWMBO's Mine D4 commercial
Xenon's fitted Timed climate
EGR Blanked Remapped
Remap Reversing Camera

I use the feature as a map. Not as a to blindly follow, direction finder. And I quite like it. I also use the bread crumbs (trace route) feature when off the roads and trails.
And of course my favorites list.
Yes, the USB update feature does take a long drive to complete. And it is VIN dependent. You can source the update from navigation.com. less than 2 hours to complete comes to mind. 2015 LR4 HSE Lux Aintree Green

I think this version is the last update made for the D4: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/222559638817
I think you also need the GAP IID tool or similar to find the version you have installed so you don't update over the same version! Discovery 4 HSE late 2015 Euro6

I'd get CDS to just fit an Apple Car play / Android unit. Much better mapping and also more functionality that brings the car pretty well up to date. New Defender L663 110 SE (known as Noddy!)

Actually, the installer detects the current version then prompts for upgrade.
Moreover, the pass key supplied is tied to the vin of the vehicle.
(so yes, I had to purchase two sets)
The other reason I use the built in feature is this: Many prefer to riddle their dash or windscreen with “additional devices”. Not me.

But have you looked at the carplay options? I have the original screen but a new box hidden away up behind the glove box. I then have the option of CarPlay on the original screen or all the normal D4 screen activity (except the crappy LR sat nav). When you press the Nav button, the screen changes to CarPlay.
Best upgrade I ever did

Just to confirm, the carplay is not on a separate screen, it is on the original LR touchscreen
