Door Ding - Possible to Repair? |
|
Hi all
My MY08 had its first service yesterday. All paid for ($514) by LRA under the PAG corporate service plan. All went OK, car was nice and clean and ready on time, except for two marks on the drivers door...............
One's a small chip, and the other is a small gouge down to the metal with a very slight dent. I immediately raised it with the service advisor who said it would be looked after. The car's booked into their paint shop in a couple of weeks, and they're providing a loan car during the repair. I'm disappointed it happened, but it could have been one of their customers.
I can't fault their assistance in getting this resolved - so I'm not having a whinge. Very professionally handled by the service team.
However, they're proposing to have the car for a few days, so I assume they are going to repaint the entire door. My car is Stornaway Grey, which as you know has a fair bit of texture to it. Is it possible for a paintshop to a get a perfect match to factory paint colour-wise (bearing in mind Land Rover paint has free orange peel anyway....)?
Has anyone had any experience with paint shop Barbagallo uses? I expect it to be reasonably good, given they also sell Lambos, Ferraris and Astons....
Alternatively, would it be safer to go for a touch up style repair?
Any feed back would be appreciated.
Thanks
Benson

I'd be amazed if Barbagallo didnt do a very through job; take up their offer.
What is this PAG Corporate Plan? I noted an HSE Disco for sale in Dalkeith that the guy advertised as having all Services paid in full until late 2009...whats the story with that????
cheers
Chris

PAG (Premier Automotive Group, consisting of Jaguar, Volvo, Aston Martin & LR) offer free servicing for three years for cars purchased by employees of eligible organisiations. I think the criteria is >$20M turnover or 50 employees?
I'd be surprised if this was transferrable to a new owner.

Hi,
Yep, I have that plan and I'm pretty sure it is not transferable.

Surely they will also have to blend into the o/s/r door and also the front wing to look good? As you slide down the banister of life

Hi Benson,
I had a little dent fixed last year (right rear quarter panel) and then had a scratch (keyed) repaired from the drivers door this year. The paint came up a treat on the rear quarter and then when I had the scratch repaired on the drivers door the panel beater recommended to paint the entire side of the car in order to "get it perfect". This included the front and rear quarter. No surprise that the job was spot on and cost was cheaper than other NON LR approved quote. The repairer was LR approved and listed in the service manual. Let them fix it but don't accept it unless you can't see the repair and are 100% happy.
Good luck... What's the point.... it all comes out in the wash anyway!

Our zermatt silver D3 was keyed from front to back less than 24hrs after we took delivery. Unfortunately it was down to the metal. Barbagallos referred us to Lombardi Bros in Cannington who are their preferred repairer and also happened to be RAC approved. They ended up respraying the whole side of the car and blending the the metallic paint in on the front and rear panels. They had it for nearly a week. Job turned out great and you would never know that work had been done (not at least to a non professional).
I took comfort in the fact that Lombardis specialise in the top end luxury cars - many of which are more expensive than the D3.
I think someone else on the forum has said it before but leave it to the professionals.
All the best with the repair job.

Thanks for the replies.
I was a little apprehensive about them ripping into nice new factory paint, but that's only due to dramas I've had with previous vehicles.
I had a new CR-V which had a small dent and scratch added by the wife. As the lens was also busted, it was an insurance job. A panel shop on Frobisher St (now since closed down, after whinging to the media about how tough the business is) fixed it.
I returned it as there was dirt under the paint.
They had another crack at it, and it was worse. Took it to the insurer, and they allowed me to try another mob in Osborne Park who did a good job. The originally repairer rang me at work and told me I was fussy and unreasonable, so give them a third try, as they do good jobs on show cars! (the insurer had to replace the rear window as the rubber seal and window is a single piece unit, and the original repairer got paint all over it, and had to have it retinted. SGIO was also charged for a new bumper, but there was a small mark on the original which I knew was there, and coincidentally the same mark was there after being replaced! - I let SGIO know about that as well).

Lombardi do very good work - they have done some very good work on my other car (metallic grey Lotus). They were so particular that they weren't happy with the first result and had the dulux expert come in to do it!!

Well, the car's been repaired and the panel looks like new. They've even managed to replicate the factory orange peel..........
Car's a bit grubby though - lots of white dust on exterior (and on dash), I assume from sanding.
They also fixed the radio again - loose connector? It turned itself on in the garage on the weekend and wouldn't turn off - wierd.
The loaner car was a petrol Freelander. Has anyone driven one of these? It's a wierd car - did not feel integrated. I'm used to heavy controls in the Disco (and my other car's a BMW), so it took a bit of time to get used to the hyper-sensitivity of the brake pedal. The accelerator was at the other extreme. Nothing for the first few inches and then ZOOM - almost like it had a problem (is it drive-by-wire?). Really hard to drive smoothly. The steering was nice though.
