Dilemma on broken crank

Hi all,

My 2010 (2011MY) 3.0 SDV6 has a broken crank.

I am trying to get it fixed as economically as possible.

My go to mechanic has decided it is too much for him to cope with so won’t help.

Two other mechanics i contacted showed interest but have also disappeared.

I went to a specialist today who refuses to fit anything but a new/recon crate motor.

I cannot find a sensibly prices used unit. Even if i did i cannot find a mechanic to fit it.

I went to an engine rebuilder today who said he would rebuilt the engine for roughly £1700 but i would need a new block most likely so back to the problem of finding an engine.

If i go this route i still don't have a mechanic to fit it.

I have been offered rebuilt engines via ebay from London and Birmingham for around £2.5k but again so far no one to fit them and i don't know really what I am buying. Could be scammers/ low quality.

Anyone got any ideas on how to approach?

Location is Wiltshire, near Warminste/Westbury.

Thanks

Buy a cheap Jag with the 3.0l engine and swap it.

If not, speak to Oval Motors on here or NWS in Shropshire. Thumbs Up

Or buy this and sell yours for parts.

A recon crated motor with 2year warranty is 6k im afraid its the fitting that racks the bill up because of this most people wont entertain putting in a cheap engine as the risks are to great ! if the engine is 2k or 6 the fitting is the same and dont expect anything under 5k and that would be cheap as the body has to come off and many are not geared up to do that. Personally 2010 year to me would be totally uneconomical to do.

Or, looked at another way, what is £12K going to get you and how does it compare to your D4?

Reality is, its uneconomical to repair.

Save your money and get either a later model with less miles, or look at another brand to do what you want it to do.

You might get a couple of grand for yours as spare or repairs. Talk to Del about striping.

You know stripping makes sense. Thumbs Up

Then move to either Volvo of Skoda. Pref the latter, but I may be biased. Whistle

It would get me a newer D4 and i could wait for the engine in that one to go bang too?

Makes no sense.

They are all unreliable, could pay a fortune for a 2016 D4 and it have crank failure months later.

Better I make mine as reliable as possible.

Just to clear things up a bit, i was looking for helpful advice on how to get it sorted.
So things like leads to garages that actually repair rather than only fit crate engines.
Or sources of a good working engine.
Maybe a connection to a good engine builder etc etc

Instead most seem to think the answer is to give up and scrap it.
Probably because the D3 boys want more D4 parts to put on their machines.

I see you Smile hands off my prettier grill and tail lights!

I plan to get her back on the road. I will try to make the engine as reliable as is feasible given what a turd of an engine it is. That longer term makes more sense than putting more money into a newer one that will lose even more money when the inevitable happens.

If that’s the case, contact NWS or Oval. The reality is though, most people with these look at it economically.

Shipley can help you get it moved up to NWS or Oval. It’s probably your easiest route to getting you back on the road with reputable aftermarket engine fitters.

Don’t go to the eBay or Facebook £3000 engine fitters. You’ll regret it. Thumbs Up

Before you do anything ref the engine take a good hard look at the condition of the underside, especially round the suspension mounts and sills.

When the crank on my D3 failed at 180k or so miles I ignored common sense and had Disco-MIkey fit a new LR egnine for me - total cost - including many upgrades and mucho maintenance whilst the body was off - came to well under £10k - albeit a good few years ago.

The car has now completed almost 290k, ie more than 100k on the new engine, so my investment has paid off. However, despite being one of the last D3s (2009, so only a year older than your D4), Mike has advised that its time has come and that it will not get through another MOT due to significant rust and rot on the rear end. I live close to the sea (like 15 metres away) so am almost certainly atypical, but please take an honest look at the rear end before putting your hand in your pocket.

Not the car in question, but actually one of the very last D3's, 18 months newer than Tony's

If you do decide to go down the route of a replacement engine, why not a crate engine? Confused
