Using GAP or AP200 tool when increasing tyre size? |
|
Running standard 255 60 18 Goodyear Wranglers on my 2005 Disco 3. However have been offered a very good deal on almost new Michelin Latitude tyres 255 70 18. So question because I’m going from 60 to 70 should I use my AP200 to enter new tyre size and has anyone done this successfully.

In my humble opinion, 255/70R18 are far too large ! It's about 1" increasing the radius and +6.7% on the circumference (3% max. allowed).
But, in order to answer the question, you should modify some values in CCF (width, ratio, rim size, tyre circumference).

Agree so ended up with Cooper Discoverer AT3’s 265/65/18. Perfect fit, no rubbing. Haven’t made any alterations with AP200 yet. Minimum speed difference compared to original 255/60/18. Very happy with them

265/65R18 seems to me still pretty too large (more than 5% above approved sizes).
Did you check space in fender when on bump stops, even steering wheels ? They're more than 19mm bigger on radius... But apologise if some difference between D3 and D4 about this point, I have only experience of my car.

I've often wondered what insures make of out of spec tyres in any claims? Anyone have any experience? New Defender L663 110 SE (known as Noddy!)

Hi Moo,
You're right. I have no real experience but I just guess that they shouldn't care except if this point is in any way the cause of an accident and/or if there are personal injuries.
By example, if a tyre burst because rubbing on a screw head, I think that would become a serious problem ! By my side, I prefer to don't take too much useless risk...

I had a non-fault accident when stationary at a junction in my D3 back in 2015.
The supposedly like for like courtesy car I was offered was a LWB Shogun.
I rejected it on two counts, firstly that it didn't have a Towbar, and secondly that it wasn't fitted with AT tyres like my D3.
Both were needed to Tow my boat/trailer across the field where it was stored if wet.
My insurer would not supply a vehicle with either as they were not fitted as standard to the D3.
In the end I had a Golf for a few weeks and enjoyed driving it whilst the boat had a rest.
I had a lengthy conversation with an actually quite helpful customer service guy who was happy to make a note on my policy that the D3 had a LR Towbar fitted, and was a little surprised a colleague had made such a fuss about it.
However, regarding the tyres, they were initially seen as a modification that hadn't been notified, and I had to provide details of what was fitted.
They were happy in the end that the GG AT's fitted were an acceptable replacement fitment in the correct size and spec for the D3, but I've always been convinced it may have caused a delay had I been claiming on my own policy.
I do know that a different non-standard tyre size would have been an issue that they would have expected to have been declared as a modification.
And as we know, insurance companies like to know about mods before you need to make a claim, as they'll use any excuse not to pay out. Heaven doesn't want me, and hell is afraid I'll take over.

Simon - I have a VERY comprehensive of all mods to each car which I submit to insurers at renewal.
The V8 MG one runs to 5 A4 pages. Insurers never say "We don't want that much detail", but I doubt that they read it all !

I do the same. I'm a bit OCD on insurance, whatever its for. I had a colleague at a previous company who had a house fire that wasn't paid out on the contents because he was under insured.

I recall an example... In the far past, a work friend had a terrible accident on a highway with an Alfa Romeo GTV when a tyre bursted. It appears that a mechanics who previously changed the tyres placed chambers in Tubeless type tyres, arguing he couldn't make them airtight on the rims...
It has been a long, complex and harrowing trial and I don't remember how that ended.
