D2 at the Steinplatte

Not a Disco 3 but I was happy to see that I won't be quite alone when mine arrives (I also saw a couple of Freelanders in the main car-park).

For my first afternoon's skiing of this winter, the slopes weren't quite as empty as you might have imagined with only nine cars in this car-park. It is actually at the top of the Hohenstrasse Steinplatte, quite a steep forest road that used to be the only access to the Steinplatte. However, there has been a cable-car direct from Waidring for about five years now (you can see it in the sunset photo in my gallery), so there's really no reason to drive up the road - unless you have a Disco, I suppose, and just want the fun! The Renault van and the Audi had chains on, the others didn't.

The Disco's registration has an LR in it. I wondered whether it belonged to a dealer or just a proud owner.

The Steinplatte is near the village of Waidring in the Tyrol (about half an hour's drive from Kitzbühel). For anyone who knows it, the good news is that they have replaced the 3-seat chairlift on the Kammerkör with an 8-seat model. It even has the "Winter Comfort Packet" - heated seats. Whatever will they think of next? I even imagined occasionally that I could feel warmth percolating up from below, though I don't think there's much danger of getting your pants scorched Smile

I was only on the slopes for the afternoon (all I can stand at the start of the season). Although misty at the start, the weather improved, Cairngorms style, as time went on so that there was a fantastic sunset. Comsidering that there was no snow at all on the Steinplatte two weeks ago, the pistes were great.

End of Jan for me.

Assuming all you guys drive to your skiing destinations rather than fly - do you
take snow chains and if so which type do you recommend?

Thanks.

I have done both I always got more skying done when driving!
Takes me about the same time then you add up driving to airport, parking, having to check in early, fly, waiting for your luggage, waiting for the bus transfer, dropping off at other hotels! Still takes a day!
But we did fly to Canada this year! Very Happy

Drivers of the world unite, you have nothing to lose ...

As I said in another thread, http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1832&start=15 , I too carry chains around with me but haven't used them in 16 years. That probably means that you don't need them. But Sod's Law would imply that, if you don't have them, you will need them!

However, with a Disco equipped with winter or all-year tyres, I think you could probably manage without chains. If the conditions are so bad, that chains are needed, there's every chance the road will be closed anyhow.

Eric

... but your chains Laughing

Yes, I thought that the photos might generate a little jealousy - tee, hee, hee Twisted Evil However, what I really wanted to do, was to tickle all our snow-lovers' blood a bit - winter's coming Very Happy

It is great, though, to have the Alps on your doorstep!
