Wrong Keeper Declared - Insurance Invalid?

Hi all.

So our car was recently stolen from our drive. Insurer offered us a great settlement figure, but when they asked for the v5 I discovered that I had declared the car to be registered to me, when in fact it is registered to my wife (a named driver on the policy) - a stupid error, but an innocent one.

Could the Insurer refuse to pay out because of this? Should I try to change the registered keeper and get an updated v5 now?

Hi there the registration document only declares who is responsible for the vehicle not who owns it? Explain what has happened and Insurance companies know all the scams this doesn't sound like you are claiming fraudulently, just explain to the claims department as soon as possible. It may have been/ Very Happy be an issue if divorced recently!

Technically, when you insured the car & if the insurers asked "is the car registered in your name ?" and you said "yes" then it would be deemed a dishonest answer.

So yes, they would have a good reason to reject the claim.

Fingers crossed that they will simply view it as an honest mistake.

Assuming your wife has the same surname as you I'd not see a problem, you were both insured on the vehicle. In marriage it could be 'argued' it matters not whose name is on the V5 it's the family car...

I'd just go ahead and claim and if asked explain...

Probably not a problem given your wife is named on the policy..

Professional partners, in this case a woman, your wife frequently use maiden names etc, mine does.

Let us know how you get on...

Thumbs Up

Most insurers don’t view it to be an issues day to day, Admiral do alter the policy if the vehicle is registered in a spouses name…specifically remove driving other vehicles 3rd party

Three weeks after taking out my insurance out with Mogul Insurance I received an aggressive email from my insurers saying they could not insure me and where going to terminate the policy in 3 days and I would be charged £58 for cancellation and a pro rater charge for the period I had been “insured” for, they stated they had found an undeclared statement with my wife, they stated the reason for the cancellation would not be recorded or passed on to other insurance companies.
She did have a car catch fire and burn out over 3years ago which was declared on the application, further enquiries by email to their representative gave the answer that I had not stated my wife lived at the same address as me and they could in fact insure me and my wife for another £48.
I had not ticked a box where the question was asked, I also found out that Mogul Insurance is owned by Axa.
Guess who I will not be insured with next year.[/b]

It wasn't worth the trouble to argue the case, but a few years ago in order for my wife to be the policy holder, she had to be the registered keeper, however it is the owners responsibility to make sure the vehicle is insured.

The issue has never come up again with different insurance companies, so make of that as you will.

One thing is for sure, any way to get out of paying up for a claim is standard practice for them.
