Breakdown Insurance when travelling
What are people doing for breakdown insurance when Overlanding? We're off to Albania soon and should the worst happen, what cover should/can I have. I've very mechanically minded, and carry spares, tools for almost any issue. I can probably fix any issue, but should the engine let go, then I'm in a pickle. This is my biggest worry.
Looking at European breakdown cover, they nearly all specify that they will repatriate the car up to the book value of the car. The issue with this, is the car is a 2006 model, so probably not valued very high. Probably £2 to £3k maybe. The kit I'm carrying is probably worth this alone if not more. Hiring a van and removing all the kit to come back to the UK seems completely impractical.
So what options are there? What do others do?
Thanks
John

Worse case scenario = you’re stuffed. They will only go up to what they thinks is the value off the car, you’ll have to stump up the rest to get the car home. And if you have to scrap the car then it’s up to you to get your stuff back. And whatever you think is reasonable to get a car back to the UK, add a zero to that. Been there, done that. It’s all part of the fun and frolics of taking an old low value car sur l’continent.
