New alternator - Good charging - now battery light coming on |
|
Hi
Hopefully this is an easy question.
We have a D3 4.0 V6 which stopped the other day when my son was coming home from Christmas shopping.
Yesterday we replaced old units with a new Denso alternator, belt, pulley, and tensioner.
Battery tested at shop and found to be ok. Consistently held 12.7v and 807cca while waiting for alternator to come.
Car starts perfectly and sounds better than it has in some time, but the battery warning light will not go out.
Multimeter shows 14.05v at the battery while running.
Everything seems okay, but I don’t want to cook anything by ignoring the warning light.
I’m thinking it’s a fuse but wouldn’t that stop the car from running or starting?
Tomorrow I’ll be checking fuses and if we’ve messed up any wiring.
Thanks for your help.

14.05v with a battery at 12.7v is not good enough should be nearer 15v if everything is switched off even up to 15.5v after first starting. What does the multi-meter read at the battery with the engine off? 12.7v is low charge across the battery terminals with nothing connected, 13.2v is a fully charged battery. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

The charge warning light will illuminate if there is lost communication between the ECM and the alternator - sometimes it can take a few minutes running for everything to 'sort itself out', up to four stop/start cycles can sometimes be needed if the alternator DTC's are not cleared.
12.7VDC is fine for a static measurement, the charge voltage is heavily dependent upon temperature and charge level of the battery, additionally, if there are LIN issues between the ECM and the alternator, then until that's resolved ./ resolves itself then the charge voltage won't necessarily be the optimum one, just the default.
