Drivers heated seat burning my butt !!

Hi everyone.

Has anyone else had an issue where their heated drivers seat is way to hot to sit on even on half power ?

I’m guessing it’s a short in the seat element causing the problem.

Are there any fixes for this?

Thank you guys.
Myke.

As you note it burns and could become (is) a fire hazard really.

You could replace heating element, the base seat element is HGL500012 for a leather seat and HGL500020 for a cloth seat. The seat back element is HGK500012 for both I believe.

I think someone has done that here in the past, do try the search. Thumbs Up

Not on a D3 but I had to replace the worn out seat cushion foam on my D4. That meant removing the heater element & refitting it to the new foam. Not a difficult job to refit so fitting a new one shouldn't be too difficult biggest issue I recall was removing all the hog rings that hold the seat cover on to get at the foam & element, and then refitting it with new hog rings!

As others have said it's definitely a short, as it happens I fixed mine a couple of weeks ago. Bear in mind that if it's reached the 'uncomfortably hot' stage then it's probably started burning away the seat foam in that area too.

Fairly easy to sort - the seat base is held on by four bolts underneath (T40 iirc), then lifts off having disconnected the wiring.

You can then start to open the clips on the underside and then cut (or open) enough hog rings to get at the problem, which will look something like this (open full-sized and you can just make out where the wire burnt through):

I was in a rush so I soldered a new piece of wire in place of the damaged section and re-assembled, giving me fully working seat heating again for a cost of only the time involved, but you could carry on disassembling and then replace the entire pad.
