Hot stinky wheel

Quick one guys

Was picking the better half up from work last night, stopped on the way there to top up tyre pressures and noticed that the back right wheel was smelling pretty bad (acrid smell) and the wheel was warm to the touch around the nuts. Brake disc was very hot.

Sounds like a seized caliper to me, but just checking if there's anything else this could be? No noticeable pull to either side when driving or braking, doesn't feel like it's down on power, haven't yet noticed any decrease in fuel economy but have barely done any miles in the last week.

Sticking caliper, will sometimes release but will get worse until you end up with severe vibration... ask me how I know Laughing

If the caliper is hot then hopefully not the park brake

Order pads too incase you find them low, due to being stuck on

Thanks guys. I hope it's caliper not EPB or bearing.

I've booked it in to a local garage on Tuesday, can't do it myself as the diary is rammed full over the next 3-4 days and I need the car for Christmas period driving, 1000-1500 miles starting with heading up to York from Wednesday morning Shocked

Will be annoyed if it's the bearing, I have 2 x rear bearings ready to be fitted on 22nd for cash but back over in Glos - why didn't I bring them with me!!

Quick follow up on this:

The brake disc looks to have discoloured from silver to more of an iron grey in the centre inch or so (about half inch either side normal colour).

I’m guessing this is due to heat and supportive of the theory it’s a seized caliper, hopefully rules out hub and EPB?

Glad it was the Caliper, shame you had to drop it into the garage as replacing is a quick ne went around the same time, replaced on the drive in half hour.

I would also change the 2 flexy hoses the one to the calipur and the one from the body to the lower arm.
This because the pipe can collapse inside and form a one way valve which looks like the calipur is sticking on.
This happened to me after 2 calipur changes.

Thanks Flapper, good to know. I wonder if that's my problem as the same caliper was replaced 15k miles ago Neutral which did seem a little fast to fail...

I noticed the rear back plates are pretty badly rotten, probably missing an inch or so from the outer lower edge through rust - anyone know if this will shorten the caliper life span, and are they worth replacing?

15k for pattern parts isn't too bad, if they were TRW or similar brand, then you may have something else causing it.
Brake flexi's should be changed at six year intervals according to LR service schedule, hardly anyone bothers though.
Backing plates are not fun to change, you may be forced into it though as the EPB shoes are mounted on them.
