Stolen D5 - Anyone been asked for this from insurance ?

Our 19 plate D5 stolen today, whilst on a car park. Report to insurance today and they asked me to contact JLR with a SARs request, so that the insurance company can get the locking data.

I'm not sure how this works, I can only assume they want to read the key fobs to see what last happened via the fob, as the vehicle didn't have a tracker (it was not specified by the insurance co). We have both fibs of course, the one used to last lock the car and the spare which we keep at home (in a faraday box ironically)

Has anyone else come across this, I can't figure how they obtain the data when the car is missing, unless it's from the key. And surely, I'm going to have to go somewhere so that they can read the key ?

Any info appreciated - as you can imagine, this has been stressful !

I am not sure either. The car will have telemetric capability and more that can be read but whether that is at a distance I don't know.

It seems to me the insurers are asking you to do their legwork. If you've reported it stolen and started a claim then that surely is over to them to progress.

Sorry to hear of your loss.

Who are you insured with btw?

Maybe one of the other insurers who contribute here (or brokers... A Plan got a glowing reference earlier today) can comment?

A SAR (subject access request) can only be made by the subject, JLR would be in breach of DPA 2018 (as amended) if they provided the information directly to the insurer without the subject initiating the request.

Surely the subject is the insurer once a claim has been made?

Not sure it is too much help but the FB 'stolen' group for Land Rover is very active (sadly).

You might get further with this question on there?

Good luck..

The data is personal to the owner, not the vehicle. Dive into the DPA and look at the definitions, a vehicle cannot be a legal entity within the Act.

They could at least tell whether the vehicle had previously had another key programmed to it by another third party via the pass through programming method…
However I think they are clutching at straws.. the new method is via the canbus attack…

Some of our previous investigations highlighted that keys had been programmed prior to the date of theft.. which means two things.. either the victim might not be telling the truth and obtained a different key for whatever reason or alternatively whilst the car was being valeted or parked in an airport car park etc another key was made for it.. this was also really common with prestige hire cars whereby an additional key was made before the car was handed back… then stolen some time hence which distanced the thief /hirer from the subsequent theft…

I know most JLR products have a valet mode on the touch screen which just locks the screen to basic functions.
But it would be nice if it could be programmed to also block access to the OBD port and other functions to prevent key cloning and maybe even canbus break ins. Obviously this would be up to the owner to set every time its required but surely it cant be that difficult for LR to sort out.

Thought I would update..

So it turns out that the data I was being asked for was that which would be logged by the incontrol app, it sends the locking / unlocking data to JLR over the net and can then be interrogated and provided to an insurance co. Of course, you don't know this or think about it when you download the app. I guess you could refuse to supply the data, I'm not sure how you would then stand with the insurance co.

However, I hadn't ever downloaded the app, so as soon as JLR confirmed that, the insurance just paid out. It did make me think, what if I had the app and for some reason it had said the car wasn't locked...could be a completely unintended and very expensive consequence of using the app.

So, beware, if you use the app that's what the data can be used for.

I now have another D5 by the way, did look at options, but it's still the best family car in my opinion.

If the vehicle is inactive and left unlocked for 15 minutes ....the app warns you with a notification.
