transmission sump/filter (LR007474) |
|
Hello to all 8)
i'm about to change the sump (LR007474) and i'd like to ask whether i should go for the metallic sump & seperate filter rather than the original plastic one.
1) Is any other advantage, except those of a) not "dismantling the crossmember - thus easier to change", and b) sturdier to justify the extra money required for the metallic version?
2) Do all sump metallic versions (eg. Britpart or others advertised in ebay) require the same filter (if to be changed in future) or there are different filters for each different sump?
thnx a lot!

All of the filter brands will interchange on the metal sumps, you are fitting a filter to the gearbox rather than the sump, the sump just pushes it into place.
The filter - not really what you would expect, its just a wire wool mesh inside (I am sure they wouldn't like me simplifying it like that) It is designed just to pick up big pieces of friction material, I cut mine open to have a look at about 130,000 miles and could see nothing that would suggest it needed changing. The sump has magnets fitted to it to pick up metal debris. In either case (Metal Debris or Pieces of clutch) you would be in serious trouble that an oil service would not fix.
The most important thing is change your oil, flush it if you can, if not change it several times. Paul Redding

Dear Steve,
thnx for answer
I thought to change the sump, since i noticed a small leak (not sure whether comes from the gasket/bolts area, but definetely not from the sump plug).
i had "replaced" 4lt of oil on 50K miles, now im approaching 70K. i dont have really any transmission issues
cheers

The original plastic sump has a built in rubber gasket it may of gone hard but try to just tighten the bolts a little, be careful though they are easy to snap, perhaps just two fingers on your ratchet! Sorry don't know the torque setting for them.
The metal replacement is fitted with a paper gasket instead. Paul Redding

Thnx to all
i'll probably have to check all screws etc before i proceed and replace sump
For our info
The tightening torque for screws on a plastic oil pan is 10 Nm ± 1.0 Nm
while
The tightening torque for screws on a steel oil pan is 12 Nm ± 1.0 Nm
