Dash lights, transmission fault, Park brake fault, HDC fault

Discovery 3 2005 V6 HSE diesel.

Started to get various dash lights flashing up with transmission fault traction reduced. Parkbrake fault. Hdc fault system not available.

Figured due to short journeys it may be battery voltage dropping and cascading errors.

So have been trickle charging and seemed to sort. However, on Sat 15.5.21 went on a 2 hr trip camping with kids. Went through a puddle on left of road rather too fast. Big spray. About half hour later all above faults show with suspension lowering to bump stops.

So when I turn ignition key to on I get system fault special programs not available. Special programs off.

Speedo not registering speed, odometer not registering, yellow suspension light, suspension lowered. Flashing yellow headlight bulb. Yellow symbol exclamation with brackets. Yellow abs light. Yellow triangle with exclamation and circled by arrow.

I have iid bluetooth and plug. Takes a few goes to register. When recognised I get
12.1 V. Vehichle goes to crash mode...hazards come on and doors unlock. 14.2 - 14.5v fluctuating when engine on.

Turning engine on and off doesn't clear it. Read fault codes and cleared but come straight back.

Rac check the battery and altenator but state both are in good order.

I trickle charged overnight to make sure. Same issues.

Fault codes:

B1C57 - 14 (2F)
U0400 - 68 (AF)
U0122 - 87 (2F)
B1A56 - 18 (AF)
U0136 - 87 (2F)

So these are:

B1C57 - 14 (2F) Antenna circuit - General electrical failure - circuit current below threshold.

U0400 - 68 (AF) Invalid data received (event diagnostic trouble code) - Algorithm based failure - event information

U0122 - 87 (2F) Lost Communication With Vehicle Dynamics Control Module

B1A56 - 18 (AF) Antenna circuit - General electrical failure - circuit current below threshold.

U0136 - 87 (2F) Lost Communication With Differential Control Module - rear -

Read a lot about similar issues.

So started with cheap and easy:

Brake switch sensor? Checked..replaced with new.

Suspension connections nsf under wheel arch cover - damp /corroded? Checked...seem ok.

Tccm behind battery - checked. Disconnected. No water ingress. No corrosion. Seems ok.

Rear brake bulbs - previous owner had replaced with D4 LED.

I did add in reflectors as additional rear lights 3 years ago. Some LED's have gone. Could this be a cause? Unlikely as fault intermittent and these leds went over the last couple of years. Checked wiring in rear light clusters aio.

Steering angle sensor - calibrated twice on iid. Checked...turning with column. Aio.

Corrosion or damaged connectors Nsr behind wheel and cable. Checked..aio.

Note that there is a crack on the dash drivers side. Appeared 2 years ago. Not sure if this means the wiring underneath has issues. But then why intermittently and now. Yet to check.

Checked plugs under nsf wheel arch and could not find any damage to any wiring. Looked at the white and white / green. Aio. Checked wiring as far as I could from VDCM (ABS) module. All seems intact.

I re-calibrated the suspension (well...had to try and do from bumpstops because wont go into standard height). So...I am feeling it is the ride height sensor(s).

But no code for it. I refurbished the compressor a couple of months back. Yet to recheck wiring to it.

U0136 - 87 (2F) apparently it is a dead short on a soleniod/pump on the rear diff. This needs replacing?

I read there is also a known fault with a connector on the rear of the instrument cluster that gives similar problems. Any guidance on where it is and how to get to it.

Read also that control arm bushings or traction can be way out and both cause a problem with the steering angle sensor.

Presumeably changing height sensors and or getting suspension calibrated would be an option.

Wires beneath the passenger side door sill and driver sill both checked for corrosion...aio. Will have to take another look at these and the blue splices which I read are a weakness.

ABS sensors - checked but seem ok. Other than buying new and crossing fingers.

ABS controller - may need to replace.

Wheel speed sensor - I read nsr seems to cause speedo issues. Not actually sure what this looks like or where it will be exactly. Is this not the same as the abs sensor?

All terrain switch in the center console - checked, pulled apart..no obvious issues.

So still a couple of checks to do.

Any words of wisdom from the community?

If I was to start probing wires for continuity..how would or should I do this?

Might as well SORN it at the rate.

Checked all earths I could find. All seem tight and clean.

Spent 3 days going around all wiring under arches and cleaning and checking for breaks, or wear. All in order.

Anyone know what pins correspond to which abs sensor? I intend to check voktage acriss tgem.

Edit. Yeah ok. It could be ABS. Drive along with passenger reading the 4 wheel speed live values.

Worked it out.
Nsf green / green with brown stripe. Pin 3 and 5.
Nsr white / white with yellow stripe. Pin 6 and 27.
Osf green / green with yellow stripe. Pin 9 and 10.
Osr white / white with green stripe. Pin 7 and 8.

Bridged pin 3 (live) with the first pin then multimeter on ohms and probe in pin 1 (earth) and the second pin in the abive combinations.

Apparently no voltage going to nsf and osr. Other two were 12.1V.

Re-checked abs sensors for continuity...all 1.1. Checked body side resistance/continuity with battery disconnected. All 1.1 but osr was 1.4.

So...if there is steady ohms readings then shouldn't be a problem with the wiring or the ABS sensors. But the fact I can't get a reading might suggest the ABS module in the RHS footwell is faulty. But I have disconnected this module and still the same messages.

Any ideas welcome.

GAP iiD tells me in live values that bothbrear abs not reading and NSF is way out. Driving at 5kph it read 30kph. I am in process of removing abs sensor from hub and cleaning. May be more investigation for cogs and damage needed.

IiD also gives a high reading for RR height sensor.

I have a front and rear abs sensor on the way to test.

With so many faults with abs and suspension.
I would suspect the connector between the cab and chassis.
I think this is in the passenger wheel arch. Maybe corroded.

If not, is a point to split wiring in half to narrow down where fault is.

Or could be an earth fault in drivers footwell

Thanks Pete. I looked at those three connectors at front ns wheel arch. Checked the wiring into and out...all ok. Couldn't take the two black ones apart to check inside. Will keep trying. Pulled off some of the black tape (or cut open) to expose wires...nothing yet.

I'm getting continuity back from abs sensor plugs of 1.1 which suggests no breaks or wear / corrosion on the wires. Not getting voltage to two of the four wheel sensors (from abs connector in rh of engine bay near spare battery compartment). I wonder if this means my abs module (believe situated osf A pillar) is not working as should.

Welcome any further thoughts.

you could check the ABS unit has good power.

has 3 + (pins 3,2 Battery 28 IGNition
and 2 - (pins 1 & 4)

Temporarly connect in a known good ground, shove probe into black wire terminal and see if that improves things

with such crazy readings from ABS and suspenion, need to check power and grounds. (both ECU's shouldn't be faulty)

ensure you have good battery voltage when doing diagontic readings (use a charger) and good voltage with engine running.

Checked abs controller socket for the 2 earths and 3 live. All ok.

Tried to remove ABS sensor lsf...rusted in. Tried drilling out but just can't get through. Thinknits time for an Indy to take a look. Frustrated isn't the word.

Yaw Rate Sensor readings seem high. Ordered a second hand one. Located in under centre console. Quite a faff!

Any other ideas?

Shall try and add a pic of Yaw reading.
0 alternating with 13107 deg/s.

HDC fault special programs not available etc etc

Had this happen to my discovery 3 - 2007 2.7 tdse.
One day it was fine and then all he'll broke loose, I tried everything, battery charge, break pads changed, swapped all the fuses, changed the break wear sensors the lot...nothing worked...until I was told about the ABS / Speed sensor rear offside ...apparently it is a pain in the backside as if there is a fault with it then your HDC will fail and you get all the lights come on and nothing works...but for £26 from GSF car parts the fault was fixed. Please note that the garage had my car for 14 weeks and tried everything and nothing fixed it until I bought the ABS / Speed sensor...that fixed it . No more fault ..and the garage charred me £631 for the experience...so please please for the sake of £26 replace fhe sensor and it might save you a ruddy fortune. Hope I have helped some one out there...

Had this happen on my 2009 disco 3 a few weeks ago, RAC bloke said it was likely to be the rear diff motor overheating as apparently this is a common fault 🤷🏼‍♂️ I plugged it into my diagnostics and battery was running at 68%, took to my mechanic and he told me he it was the front offside ball joint that was worn out triggering the height sensor which was then tripping out the battery. Long story short I just needed a new battery and new ball joint which came to £260 rather than a full rear diff motor which was apparently around £600/700.
Don’t know if this will help anyone, but it was just my experience.✌🏼
