Prop Shaft Rubber????
Hi,
My Discovery 3 today went to Land Rover to have its 7 Year Cam Belt Service. In having this done they do a check on all parts and ware etc. They reported that the Prop Shaft needs to be replaced at a cost of £450! They said because a rubber is worn the whole thing will need replacing as it comes as one part?
Does anyone know what this means and if I have any other options?
Thanks
Andrew

Centre bearing is rubber mounted then glued to the mounting frame, this will have parted company. There are aftermarket ones out there but:
a) they are pants
b) they are difficult to fit
If you want to have a go don't buy one I have one here that you are welcome to, I got it in to decide whether to sell them or not and I wouldn't.
I have seen on this forum of people glueing them back together with a structural sealer like Tiger Seal, otherwise best to get a new shaft.Paul Redding

Alternatively, pack out the failed rubber support with Sikaflex (after a good cleaning with thinners).
Spend £10, leave for 24 hours. Job jobbed (well, mine is still fine after c.15,000 miles.Black 05 TDV6 HSE Auto

Got a propshaft from a breaker for £60. Fitted it and problem solved. I have bought some of the sikaflex and will repair my original shaft to keep as a spare. Thanks for the input all!

I recently performed the Sikaflex fix as described by highlands above. Thanks for the instructions regarding the repair. The result looks pretty much as in the pictures posted by highlands. After filling in the Sikaflex and letting it cure for about 48h, the prop shaft now seems to be attached much more firmly than with the standard rubber bearing (in flawless condition). I was wondering if this was any problem since the prop shaft thus has less movability due to the firmer Sikaflex rubber? Any reply is much appreciated!

Right up to my crash, that wasn't caused by sikaflex repair btw, it was still going fine.
There should be very little articulation in the joint so, unless you are getting vibration from it I wouldn't worry.
If you compare it to the number of D3s that have been driven for thousands of miles with the joint hanging pretty loose I can't see it being anything like as bad.
Anyway, I never had any problems and have done exactly the same with my replacement D3 that had the same issue.Black 05 TDV6 HSE Auto
