Knock through steering wheel |
|
I've a 'knock' i can feel through the steering wheel, only feel it over rough ground, any ideas where i should look first? id hoped it was related to the front lower arms that need replacing but ive had them done along with both front air stuts and its still there, front wheel bearings were done last year, i run 255 55 19 Scorpion ATPlus and have 30mm spacers fitted these will be coming off soon as ordered new wheels and tyres

Try looking at the lower steering column... only use genuine LR to replace if it is this... I want to see the sweets before I get into your windowless van... I'm not stupid!

You can see the UJ from the engine bay but you also need to check underneath (two person job).. not something I’ve changed myself as DM did mine when I had identical symptoms I want to see the sweets before I get into your windowless van... I'm not stupid!

Wonder if he fancies a trip to the seaside to do mine 😆😆
Valuable info I’ll check it out during the week thanks Andy
Edit - gave the lower column a thoroughly good looking at whilst changing the alternator it does appear to be the source of the knock, Genuine one ordered will get it fitted asap

Fitted the new one and the knocks gone😎
However….. I have a different knock now! Can’t feel it only hear it, normally once stopped and then reversing like a couple of clunks as I turn the steering, it’s not constant only when stopping the reversing
Any ideas?

Could possibly be the stops need greasing if it's happening on full lock? five minute job... my then local indie (near you) didn't even charge for it as it was part of the health check.. I want to see the sweets before I get into your windowless van... I'm not stupid!

Don't rule out the stabilizer bushes. When these have play you feel it through the steering wheel as well.

I can’t feel the new knock only hear it, changing the lower column sorted that, I think it’s the left hand drive shaft /cv joint, it’s very reminiscent of the noise my old defender made when the cv went on that, I plan to have a look tomorrow thinking I’ll drop the diff oil out as precautionary check then go from there

Turns out my new knock was loose wishbones, I’d had the lower arms and 4 wheel alignment done a few weeks before the lower column, so I’m guessing at some point they weren’t tightened correctly and worked loose 1972 Series 3 full of character
