Failed inspection

Well, it finally happened. My lovely D3 failed inspection. Big Cry

1. Turned out propshaft center bearing was completely shot. Fair enough, should have noticed that myself but I did not… Whistle

2. Right rear upper carrier arm had “some play” (moved laterally about 1-2 cm when forced).

3. Right rear wheel bearing had play.

4. Rear right knuckle bushes had some play.

Some questions - what would you do?

- buy two Lemforder bushes for the knuckles? I don’t have the equipment to do the bearing and bushes, I’ll need to find someone to do it. Cost of two bushes + wheel bearing is much less than buying a brand new knuckle (LR045822, LR045823) with them pre-installed.

- would you also replace the wheel hub (RUC500120) since the bearing gets replaced?

- would you also replace the lower right carrier arms? They’ve been there forever but the inspector said they’re ok. If I have to replace them later for some reason I’ll end up paying for alignment again.

- would you also do the left side simultaneously? It’s just as old even if it is “fine” right now.

- any brands that I should avoid or prefer? I don’t want polybushes but for example, the knuckle bushes seem originally to be made by Lemforder (ZF).

Added a colorful image of the four different areas.

I just renovated the rear end of my D3 V8, all three arms, the knuckle bushings and brake lines, cable hooks etc. Not wheel bearings though, they were OK.
Did both sides, ordered parts from AF, lemförder bushings etc.
Very happy with how it drives now after alignment.
Both upper arms had corrosion issues and two bushings were shot.
I installed the bushings myself with threaded rod and some pieces of pipe and sockets.
Removed the air springs and drive shafts as well and got rid of loose rust and painted the whole rear end of the frame.
Not very expensive or difficult but took me a good couple of hours Very Happy

Thanks for the pointers. In the end AF was my choice, too, for upper and lower arms as well as the pre-made knuckle-wheel bearing-wheel hubs.

There didn’t seem to be any availability for GKN or Hardy Spicer (same company) propshafts so Febi is what it’ll be.

I had all the front end bushes replaced by a garage near Turku (bit of a drive) when I was out your way, they did it very quickly and given the age of my D3 at the time said it was in very good condition. Not too expensive either, I ordered all the parts from the UK and they just supplied labour...

Can't for the life of me remember the name of the place though (think you might even have mentioned them?)

Perhaps off-road paja? There aren’t too many places over there, I think.

Mine is starting to get rusty underneath. The sills look absolutely hideous. I got to take a close look with the inspection guy using a steel bar to “knock” on them from underneath. Shocked
