Pirelli All Terrain Plus - Wear Noise or Wheel Bearing?

Morning All,

My AT+ tyres are getting a bit worn now, probably down to 4 / 5mm and I've noticed a lot of rotational noise from about 35mph - 50mph. Kind of a throbbing whuuring noise... below or above these speeds it's not really noticeable.

Both my front bearings are new <20k miles Timkin... my rears are original on 190,000 but I can't feel any play in them.... my Proshaft is also new.

Right not I think it is either just increased tyre noise or the rear bearing(s)... I guess it could be a driveshaft or other transmission noise but I can't think what?

Anyone with the same tyres experiencing more noise?

Any other ideas of what could be going on?

Check the inner edges for castellation or 'wavyness', we get a lot of 'there's a wheel bearing on it's way out' type jobs where the tyres are the cause.

Mine were noisy when they wore down. So much so that I decided not to buy them again when I changed them.

1. Never tell everything you know.

How many miles are they good for before they get noisy? If anyones had Duratracs or grabber AT3s before how do you think they compare? I’ve been underwhelmed by the Grabbers and tempted to go for AT+ or back to Duratracs

True. Although Duratracs are a lot better in mud. I’m hoping AT+ are somewhere between the two?

I had Grabber AT2's - the sidewalls appeared to have been made from baby poo, I've never bought any of their products again, Duratracs are not available in the size I need, and look a bit 'noisy' like the old MT/R's, which doesn't leave much choice....

MT/Rs did make a bit of noise didn’t they? Definitely gave the amp a workout to drown them out on the motorway Smile

I have Pirelli AT+ 255/60R18 on my Freelander. They were pretty quiet when new but gradually get louder. I have 6 of them & put the 2 spares on the front. The front is now quiet again. The car is very quiet due to acoustic insulation. But old tyres are noisier than new ones.

They are quieter on dirt roads & metal grate of a bridge I drive over regularly.

First step, rub the flat of your hands over the tread, if you feel one direction is smooth and the other direction is rough or your can feel steps in the tread you need to swap the wheels round so that they run in the opposite direction, diagonally not side to side on the same axel is best.
The front edge of the tread wears faster than the rear this is normal but it can be the cause of “droning” at certain speeds, agricultural tractors that do a lot of road work suffer the same and can be heard coming half a mile or more away, problem is their wheels cannot be turned round due to the self cleaning design of the tread. Thumbs Up

The best all rounder by far if you did a lot of road miles.

I did, and a lot of non-road miles too. I think I got around 32k from a set, using them to ~4mm
About 38k on my FL2 using them to about ~3mm

To date I had only done 1 swap putting the 2 spares on the front to share the wear between the 6 tyres. The front tyres were still quite.

I swapped the tyres to the opposite sides of the car & front rear, while putting on the 2 used spares making sure the wear is running the other way.

The car is very quiet due to acoustic insulation but I could hear the 2 more worn tyres on the rear.

I am surprised at the improvement in quietness swapping left right. The 2 used spares I put back on are actually a bit more worn than the 2 most worn tyres I took off.

So from this experience I can say if the tyres are noisy swap so they rotate opposite direction. It's worth the effort, even with a scissor jack as in my situation.

I had the same problem with my pirelli scorpion original tyres that came with the car from new. Noise at about 4-5mm and was told two were stepped. Get in touch with Pirelli if so. They seemed quite open to gathering information about the issue when I contacted them. They said they would pay for a tyre to be sent to them from the garage if I arranged it. Was a bit too much hassle at the time so I didn't bother.
