Just get a local indie to do a oil & filter change with the correct oil, no amount of flushing will clear the filter.

Issues are caused by dirty oil, not a dirty filter

If the filter is blocked, your going to be suffering from major issues that no amount of oil/filters will cure...

So why change the filter?
Clearly if it's 'blocked' there are issues and the shift quality would get progressively worse as it becomes restricted.
Other manufacturers using ZF (and other) transmissions have an oil & filter change in the servicing regime, no manufacturer that I'm aware of, certainly none of the marques I've worked for, have a process to change the transmission oil by 'flushing'.

Having experienced the 'night & day' difference in transmission shift quality after oil & filter change, especially when it's overdue (on customers vehicles I hasten to add), I would personally never entertain anything other than using the specified oil and changing the filter. Yes, I did add 30ml of Shell anti-foaming agent to mine, which is over & above the requirement.

There is no "flushing" schedule, as not all flushing machines are equal

You can buy a machine for less than £500, but the risk of damage to the transmission is very high

Flushed properly, with the correct equipment and oil, there is very little risk

As for the filters inside the 6/8HP boxes, they are of a coarse plastic construction. You can see daylight through them. They are only there to catch big lumps of debris (which we've already concluded is a bad thing)
The smaller particles pass through, and get pushed through the gearbox over and over, causing wear...

A gearbox will last longer with regular flushing, than it would with oil + filter replacement at the same intervals Thumbs Up

Interesting that you mention risk values of flushing - I hadn't considered that. Of course, there is zero risk (as long as the manufacturers work instruction is followed) in carrying out the recommended oil & filter change with the correct parts & fluids. It's clearly something we're never going to see eye-to-eye on so i'll not pollute the OP's question any further.

Dartford Transmissions are a JLR specialist, as well as a transmission specialist, and have nothing bad to say about gearbox flushing, under the correct circumstances Thumbs Up
