Timing belt change.

Recently had a timing belt change and gearbox flush on a Disco3 I purchased as a tow car. Vehicle 2 owners serviced every 6000 miles, showing.

No record of timing belt change in service history, 2nd owner was unsure if had been done. changed as a precaution, turned out it had been replaced.

Thats the good news.

Car developed slight water leak after replacement. booked it in last friday to rectify. Call from garage yesterday engine is knocking its nuts off, sounds like its spun the main bearings. This is about ten days after belt replacement.

Question is, is there anything that can go wrong when changing cam belt that could have caused an issue with the oil pump that may have caused this. Its a garage i deal with regularly, im not looking to screw them over, just seems like a hell of a coincidence considering how well the vehicle has been maintaine, didnt expect this..

Many thanks in advance

Nick

Dropped my RRS of at my indie last week, and he had a D3 that had had a replacement engine fitted, but was knocking like crazy, turned out to be the fuel pump!

Thanks for the replies. Oil filter has been pulled, full of metal particles, looks like bearing material.

I've owned the D3 for about a month, didn't replace oil pump when cam belt changed.

I have no issues getting the work done, just seemed like a hell of a coincidence, change cam belt, engine starts leaking water, bearings Censored themselves. Maybe just unlucky, but for my own peace of mind would like to confirm nothing could have been done to cause this to happen.

Cheers

Hi,

from what ISTR new belt on an old pump can cause it to fail but its more likely to break it off (the mounting?) does the oil pump still look ok.

welcome by the way, please dont forget to update us on what the cause/fix ends up being

I think the belt replacement is largely irrelevant to the situation. The belt is on the outside, the bearings inside, and the 2 have no interaction between each other

The coolant leak would be my initial concern. How bad was the leak, and where was it leaking from?

Losing about .25 litre each day. Leak at the water pump.

Either the o-ring has failed or the pump seal is leaking so pump needs replacing.
