Rear click -unable to find the source, CV diagnosis?

Hello!

I've got an incredibly annoying clicking sound coming from the rear nearside of the car. I've had the wheels off and it up on stands with me looking around with a torch for ages but I can't for the life of me see where the source could be.

It happens with one full rotation of the wheels and is a metal on metal sound like someone has just pinged a bike spoke.

The only thing I can think is left is perhaps a CV? I don't have a way to get it up with all 4 wheels off the ground and check with it running but I've had someone walk alongside it and the sound is certainly coming from the rear nearside quarter.

How would I go about diagnosing if it's the CV, or are there any other obvious things I've missed?

Many thanks!
Alex

Stupid question (but it’s the type of thing I get caught by) but you have checked the tyres 100% haven’t you? No nail or stone in one of them?

I've been caught out by that too in the past but yes, sadly, it's not that simple. It's a distinctive metal on metal noise and I really wish I could pin it down.

Thanks for the sanity check though, it's been needed before now Laughing

Same issue here

I've got the same issue as you describe. Mine sounds as if something is clicking in the transfer case, but I replaced my transfer case with a running used one off ed=bay, and the sound remained.

I am about to throw some Dr. Tranny Lube in my transmission, but it sounds rearward of the transmission. I've also replace both rear CV axles, from the hub spline tube to the inner rear differential.
Replaced emergency brake shoes, both sides, sound still there.

I am in the process of rebuilding the bearings and seals in my transfer case the original unit, so maybe this will help. But I don't think it will sort out the click clacking noise, mine sounds like a "dog" running on a winch. Might be time to throw some big money into her or sell the beast,.

Today I had to clean the positive connection to the starter, and got it to start, so no starter needed.

I'll update you, but if you look at my posts I made a video of mine. See if that sounds like your issue?

Have you checked the handbrake shoes?
