Travel insurance for road trip to Austria through Europe

Hi Folks, we are potentially going to be travelling to Austria in July and was wondering if anyone has any good contacts for insurance for my D3 for the journey there and back and decent cover should the worst happen whilst we are in EU or out there.

Also, we will be travelling there through France and Germany on the way there and then a bit of a dogleg either through switzerland to drive through the alps on the way back or up into poland to visit Auschwitz. If anyone has any good places to stay or camp that might be on the route then i would love to hear from you guys. We have done france twice beofre so are well versed in that but if anyone has any good reccomendations on the routes below then i would be glad to hear from you.

England

We are towing down to Italy in a few weeks, through France and Switzerland, and I have red pennant travel and breakdown cover via the caravan club. Not cheap but have seen good reviews from others when they needed to use it.

Also, for travel on major road in Switzerland you will need a vignette (40 CHF)

Vignette also required for Czech if you were to take that route (i would) to Auschwitz. Just to add, if you ever played Arma 2, 3 or DayZ, the map Chernarus is almost an exact replica of the Usti nad Labem region in the north of Czech.

Vignette can be bought at petrol stations or online BEFORE entering the country. Or avoid motorways on Gmaps and forget the vignette. Austria and Slovenia have gone digital now, no more stickers Sad Not sure about Switzerland as havent been there for a few years.

Worth swinging by Lux for "cheaper" fuel and best Maccies in Europe. Poland also very cheap fuel comparitively. Austria is cheaper than Germany. I drive from Lincoln to Lux on 1 tank and then Lux to Salzburg on another for cheapest fuel on my way to HR.

Insurance wise, I've always been with adrian flux who give 30 days fully comp per year included. I pay extra for excess and I can't remember what that is but its reasonable (maybe £50 for another 30 days). They also include EU breakdown.

You are automatically covered 3rd party within EU/EEA by all UK insurers by law.

Switzerland hasn’t gone digital yet, it’s still a sticker 😉

I better swing by CH and grab another sticker then before they go!

Also worth consdering if you havent already is a decent bank for travel. Starling comes with my highest recommendations. Zero fees on payments abroad, just uses the MC exchange rate which is as good as it gets.

As far as camping goes, depends on your set up. I usually just wing at the end of each day and have landed on a good camp probabably 95% of the time. I have never ever been moved on. Usually my tactic is to look for blue bits (lakes) on google maps and some sort of white line leading up to it (roads). Once you get to Poland/Czech, no one gives a Censored no matter where you stop (just seriously watch out for ticks). You can ask farmers and again never been turned away. Austria, Germany a car parks next to a lake is usually fine. But we sleep in the Disco. Bit different with tents or caravans.

Re travelling bank, we’ve changed from Starling to Chase. Top banana exchange rate and 1% back a couple of days after the spend. On the road now and it’s been excellent. Thumbs Up

Not been following fuel prices closely but for diesel ISTR Austria was cheaper than Switzerland and here in Berlin it’s around €2 per litre.
