Check Brake Pads Light Flickering But Brake Pads Fine.
Hi
So for the last week or so i keep getting the yellow warning light on the dash flickering on and off (the one next the temp gauge) and a message appear saying ''check brake pads''.
I have checked the brake pads and they are fine. The way the lamp flickers makes me wonder if its a wiring fault. Has anyone come across this before or know any common faults that cause this?

When you say they are 'fine' what do you mean by 'fine' in mm? Have you checked both front & rears?

Hi, both sets have at least 7-8mm left.

Is there a lip/ridge on one of the brake disc that is triggering the brake wear sensor?
On my vehicle when the ''check brake pads'' message came on it was latched on until the ignition key was removed.

No there doesn't look to be a ridge.
I also thought the warning lamp would latch, hence me wondering if its an electrical problem?

The warning light comes on when the two wires inside the cable make contact with each other or the brake disc acts as a switch and makes contact with both wires, the sensor only works on one brake pad front and one rear which are on the inside and hardest to check without removal, it's a mistake to look at the outside pad and assume they are both worn equally.It can when others can't,

It goes where others don't.

I have ordered another pair of sensors as they are dirt cheap, and will try replace them next weekend. However i still think it very odd that the light flickers on and off, especially after a week of driving.
I managed to find a wiring diagram on this site, that shows that theirs a wire that runs from the gauge cluster to the front sensor, then the back sensor and final a grounding point in the rear of the car. It looks like it goes through several looms, so tracing a wiring fault might be difficult.

If you remove the brake sensors from the calipers you'll soon see if they are worn/been touching the disk.
The flickering dash light is an indication of initial sensor wear and gives you time to save up for new pads, if left to progress the light will illuminate constantly suggesting to add disks to the shopping list.

I had a brake warning light come on and it turned out to be the sensor wire. It had been damaged somehow and was nearly broken in two with both wires bare and touching.

Hi All
Just if anyone if interested, I thought i would provide an update for you.
I took all the wheels off and all the brakes had plenty of life left in them and the senors looked fine. I tried replacing the rear sensor first as this looked easiest. This didn't do anything. Then I got to the front passenger wheel and found the sensor cable goes up behind the wheel arch lining, when I gently pulled this cable the connector just fell out from behind the linning.
So I removed the wheel arch liner, which is a fiddly job, but not to difficult. I found that there was a cable plugged into the socket that had just been twisted together (see picture)! So i unplugged this and plug the sensor in and now the light has gone out
It looks like who ever did the brakes last just cut the original sensor wire, twisted the wires together and pushed it up behind the liner, alone with the new sensor plug.
So really please the light has gone out, but on the other hand i found both rear wheels had a little back and forth play, so looks like new rear upper arms soon
Land Rovers, fix one thing and find something else that needs fixing!
