Speedometer needle juddering (the needle, not the light)

Hi,

So I have a 2005 manual 2.7 disco 3, on springs from factory. So it has no suspension electronics, no terrain control etc to contend with.

With recent fuel hikes it hasn't been driver very much recently, but unfortunately my daily runners gearbox self destructed a couple of days ago so I need to drive the disco.

I have noticed that the speedo is very unresponsive now. Sometimes it will just not move up, or more often it will smoothly run up to around 20mph then seem to get stuck. If I give the dashboard a tap the needle jumps up to the correct speed, but then I have to tap it again to get the needle to go up again. It often goes down smoothly, just not up smoothly.
I had a new r/n/s coil spring fitted and a new r/o/s upper arm recently, but I've had a quick check and the abs sensors seem to be seated well. I also think the issue may have started to develop before the recent repairs, but only very minimally in that the speedo once or twice did not register, but when I stopped and started again it worked fine.
I haven't had chance to have a code reader on yet but I don't have any warning lights on the dash (other than a persistent dimly lit Amber (p) light which is a mystery even to the garage).

I would say an abs sensor, but the needle does jump to where it needs to when you give it a tap. Could it just literally be a sticky needle from not moving for a long time? Can you get the dash out easily to check this (and is there any access to the needle to check if you do get it out).

All I can find is people's back-light flickering, as opposed to the speedo not working properly, or the speedo gives zero readout at all, again which isn't the symptoms I am getting.

Any insight or help on this would be appreciated.

As it moves to the correct speed when adjusted with a thump I would think it relates to the actual speedo. You can remove the binnacle and check it out as there has been connection problems with the binnacle.

Thanks for the reply. Is it fairly straight forward getting the whole dash out? Assuming that's what you mean by binnacle? And just check wiring, check multiplug connecter etc.

No need to remove whole dash to remove binacle,
Really simple task , dont even need to remove the steering wheel. Thumbs Up
