D4 Service cost - work of fiction?

Hi All,

Just been quoted £1780 for a service on our D4 2013 HSE by the main dealers. The car has approx £75K miles but have been told it needs to be done on age and thus it the 144K mile service apparently.
And to be clear, this isn't for belts. They have been done by an independent with the service staying at the dealers to help in the event of a fight if the crank snaps (car is under LR extended warranty).

From what I can tell, all they are doing differently on this service is some transfer case fluid after I asked what is involved. I have no problem paying to keep the car 'right' but a 1000 quid to put some transfer oil in seems a bit of a pi$$ take to me unless they do a whole list of other stuff that was not mentioned?

Thanks in advance.

Kindest,

Jonathan.

normally transmission fluid change and filter change you get 450 plus quoted from good garage rest is cheapo consumables IMHO

I would rather do megaflush

144k service is a "A" service, or 9yrs

Transfer box oil is due at 10 years or 160k miles

Meanwhile, if the crank did snap on a 9 year old car, do you really think JLR would cover 100% of the cost? Confused

Stop wasting your money OP the only way you will get goodwill with a crank is if it is full JLR dealer service. I wouldnt even feel entitled at that age and mileage. An independant LR specialist up the road has two 2014 D4s sitting in his yard that are deemed uneconomic to put an engine in both under 100K

As others have said - use a good independant!

I would venture to suggest that any "help" from LR in the event of a snapped crank would not be forthcoming as the belts etc were replaced by an independent and that is obviously the reason why the crank spanned.

Moi cynical? - absolutely!

I agree. I inquired at my local dealer to have the great idea of an extra oil change in between the LR service interval ones. (Mileage oil change intervals are criminal for a V6 diesel with only 6ltrs of oil in the sump. All the emission crap and diesel it holds. Madness)

LR dealer - £260 please sir
ME – no sorry not a service just an oil change only please.
LR dealer – £260 please sir
ME - But it takes less than 5 mins to suck the 6ltrs out whilst you screw on a new filter
LR dealer -£260 please sir

LR main dealer labour charges are now apparently £200 + VAT ....... why would you even think for a second of going to them unless your under a service plan.

Good independent all the way, and preferably a LR enthusiast/specialist as they tend to go the extra

I agree.

LR dealers are only a good idea if still in warranty as I was. Didn't bother in the end.

It can actually take a good hour to suck oil out of the dipstick, its a complete faff.

In any case there is no excuse for using that method, the sump bung should be removed and the oil drained out the bottom.

I would hazard a guess if the engine blew and LR knew you had the belts dome outside the LR network you would be screwed anyway.

Find a good independent, or do oil changes yourself.
No point throwing money away, just give it to me instead Bow down
