How important is this plastic cover above the timing belt?
OK so its the 1st time "my friend" has done the oil pump change and timing belt, all back together or so we thought then noticed this piece (presume a timing belt dust cover???) from above the top pulley -
It stops things from falling in to where the belts run, if anything gets in there it might cause havoc. It should really be in there. Its actually held in place by the cover.

Thanks Flack I presume it should have been fitted prior to the top idler pulley? difficult to get in now unless we go thru the timing process again?
Cheers

You can file the bottom two rear corners off and slip it in behind the pulley, cover still has to partially come off but not the belt, but tbh its not much more work to remove the idler pulley and do it properly.
