fuel consumption
Hi,
I have a Discovery 4 2014 HSE Lux, bought 4 years ago. When I bought it the fuel consumption was 36 mpg. 1 year after the fuel consumption dropped to 18mpg. I discovered the fuel filter hadn't been changed for 3 years, although it only gets replaced every two years. Everyone I've asked doesn't seem to know what the problem may be. The injectors were considered, but there are not problems with them.
Can anyone here help please?

You have both extremes there, 36mpg is simply amazing, and 18mpg is terrible.
D3 doing a 5 mile commute through town gets a genuine 20mpg, never gets to operating temp especially in the winter, plus the fbh is running.

what were you doing? coasting down hills all the time??
I have a D4 and normal day-today driving I get around 20-22 mpg per the "lie-o-meter" on a long motorway run it will get up to about 28 mpgUncle Ray's spare wheel protector

I've had a D4 for just over 3 years and check the actual mpg after every tankful, the best I've ever had is 28 and the worst 19, but it's usually around 25/26.
My spreadsheet tells me that over 34.5k miles I have done 24.0 MPG.
The best was 28.7 on a long trip during the fuel shortage, cruise control set to indicated 65 mph actually 61 MPH.
The worst 22.1 - a number of short trips, during very cold weather making use of pre-heat every day.

I appreciate my comments may upset some people, but I genuinely got an average of 34mpg most times I filled the tank, right to the brim, and got average 22 mpg while towing my caravan. These figures only lasted the first year I had the car but now I'm lucky if I get 18-20 mpg driving, even on long journeys. I use cruise control on all motorways and stick to speed limits. Maybe it was only a one-off year I had.
Mileage and service history are relevant, as are tyres & tyre pressure.
If nothing else has changed I would want a decent indy to read the fault codes & check everything for you.

I would really find it hard to believe that any D4 can get to 36mpg! I wouldn't get that on a trailer! Lol.
I also have a 2014 in summer I get 27/28 and winter 22/24 depending on ambient temps. All very subjective I know.... but as you have witnessed a huge drop I would be looking at the obvious like a sticky calliper or EPB although if it were the latter it would have failed by now!
After your next long run, throw a bucket of water over each disk in turn and see if there is an outstandingly hot culprit?A mod a week until I have nothing to improve or add.

I could get just over 30mpg when it was completely stock, going about 65mph on a long, motorway run. But usually I'd get ~28mpg. Since putting the Front Runner roof rack on it's dropped to ~25mpg and when I have the kayaks up there I get somewhere around 22mpg.
I've got a winch and underbody protection too which all add weight, but increasing the tyre pressure helped improve the MPG a touch.
Has anyone had any joy with a chip/tune improving their MPG? You read about all the claims online about power and efficiency gains, but that kinda sounds too good to be true (which means it probably is); I'm not interested in more power, I just want my dinosaur juice to go a bit further...

More power requires more diesel ,its the simple law of physics.
If you want better economy get a Fiat 500.

FBH impact on fuel consumption figures is a myth, it simply doesn't happen as its operational window and fuelling needs are minuscule when compared to that required by the engine.
If you genuinely think you have poor fuel economy replace the brake light switch (genuine LR) yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ
