| Tow bar - recommendations ? Cost ? |

I have a Disco 5 incoming next weekend and need to get a tow bar fitted. I've done some research on it, for detachable inc fitting, prices seem to be £750 to £830. I had one fitted on a Merc E350 around 3 years ago and it was £450. Is the Disco just more complex, or have the prices increased, or am I being taken for one on this ! ? Any info or recommendations appreciated.

I have just fitted a genuine multihieght one to my D5 it cost just under 1k it was quite easy to fit and the electrics are just plug and play.
My D5 is towing 3.5t everyday and genuine or tow trust are the only ones i would use.
I used to fit towbars for a living and only used Witter but have had a few issues with there latest designs they seemed to have lost the quality Andrew

thanks for the reply Andrew....
Couple of questions if you don't mind. Did you have to cut any or replace any of the rear panels. I'm reading up on this, but I seem to be getting different messages. Some say panel cut required, others a replacement rear lower bumper panel from a dealer at about £65.
When you say plug and play electrics, do you mean there is a terminal somewhere in the vicinity of the rear of the car that the tow bar just plugs into. Sorry new to the technicalities and as always there seems a myriad of options.
I have had a quote from Towsure - around £750 I think....

With the genuine fixed multi hieght towbar you replace the silver insert of the bumper with another one with a hole already in it.
There are electrical plugs behind the bumper that the genuine electrics just plug into no programming is needed.
The fitting instructions are online i have a link on my computer at work i will post a link up tomorrow Andrew

Have you looked at PF Jones, they include the instructions for each bar and dedicated electrics, I’ve fitted about 5 from them the latest being Westfalia and no issues at all

Yes it doesn't matter which towbar you fit they will all have to fit to the same mounting points Andrew

Thanks all for the info. Reading the Land Rover instructions, there's a step which says the car needs to be connected to LR diagnostics to programme the tow bar. I'm assuming then that this is a critical requirement when fitting any tow bar, even the LR genuine one and hence it's not a DIY job ? Does that make sense..?

If you want the car to know a trailer is fitted, activate the hidden towing features, turn off the reversing sensors and some other features, you probably will need to connect it. Some basic stuff might work but a few features wont.
If you have a deployable towbar then you will need to connect it.
Personally i wouldnt bother with an aftermarket for this car Mike
