Hi all
Need some help with originally a flat battery (as I thought), been at our sports club last night, arrived about 6.30pm, disco had driven perfectly the 20 miles from home, came out about 2.5 hours later, by all accounts the battery was flat, (dead) took off the door handle cap inserted key but the door would not open, I was driven home by a friend, returned with spare key, no joy, returned again today, removed front grill and n/s headlamp to get access to the bonnet cable, guess what battery is fully charged, after a bit of searching about I found the positive lead linking battery and fuse box was loose, tightened and all good to go, my question is why would the door lock not operate (even when the Fuse cable was reconnected), it moves as it should but won’t unlock the door ? All help appreciated. Discovery 3 SE gone but not forgotten.

Does the key still fail even with the connection tightened? A vaccine does not stop you catching a virus, or passing it on, or getting ill from it, really ill. It does reduce the likelyhood of you dying when really, really ill. Stay Alive - KEEP AWAY FROM PEOPLE.

Yes, the key turns anti-clockwise to about between 9 and 10 o’clock but the door will not open, it has never needed to be used in my ownership 🤔 if it makes any difference it is a 58 plate. Discovery 3 SE gone but not forgotten.

The lock is purely mechanical. They tend to seize if not used, try something like WD40 and some gentle persuasion.

I soaked the lock overnight with copious amounts of WD40 to no avail. Discovery 3 SE gone but not forgotten.

It isn’t only the lock that needs oil it is the linkage, with the door open try and oil inside the door to get to the linkage if that makes sense, it can take considerable force to open.
Proper graphite penetration oil is best to free off, when it is free test it periodically it’s one of those things that gets neglected until you need it. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Am I turning the key in the proper direction, there is no doubt that there is more resistance if you try to turn clockwise, I also think there is a cable or rod that is not on the other door locks, I will endeavour to oil as best I can and try again. Discovery 3 SE gone but not forgotten.

Pretty sure it turns clockwise and can be almost key breaking to get it unlocked, just keep working it backwards and forwards without to much force over the next few day. Buy an aerosol of penetrating oil. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Thanks M3DPO, Was afraid to go clockwise and break the key in the lock, this should be part of your maintenance, ok I’ve been lucky managed to get into the bonnet cable (having destroyed the grill) where I broke down the AA would have had major problems recovering me (there is a wooden bridge that doesn’t take a lot of weight), will continue trying to free it off. The key is definitely clockwise to unlock.
I had to soak mine with lot of oil. Then only one of my keys would turn even slightly - a proper locksmith looked at the blades and recut the one that would not turn FOC. he spotted some subtle difference. They both open the door easily now. I have had a "manual non programmed" key cut as well so if this happens again I can apply a bit more leverage without potentially damaging an expensive programmed fob.
Glad you got back in.
