Tow Ball Hitch Winch Plate

Hi All

Don’t let the title deceive you, I’m not intending winching off the tow bar!

I am looking into removable winch options for my D3, obviously it has 2 strong recovery points which I want to make use of and don’t want a permanent winch.

So I saw in this months Land Rover Owner Monthly magazine the guys using an external winch with a tow ball hitch attached via a shackle and got me thinking.

Does anyone own one or have any experience of them? Thinking out loud it would attach to the front fairly easily but the 90 degree change in the rear may be more of a drama.

At this stage thinking about the physical attachment and strength rather than powering it which I am not concerned about.

Any thoughts or experience you could share would be appreciated.

front or rear tow eyes...think the only problem is how the winch wire will wind if the winch is able to sway from side to side..surely it wont wind correctly

I had a towball mounted winch adapted to the front of my old car trailer it worked very well pulling heavy vehicles (2.5t) up onto the trailer and i had the advantage of removing it from the trailer and attaching it to the Discovery towbar if i needed to recover the vehicle from somewhere difficult.
My new trailer has a fixed winch and pulley system which is not as easy to use.

Thanks for the replies.

I may just insert an extra shackle to account for the extra 90 degrees on the back then, will get a 13t pair to minimise danger of them failing.

Appreciate the issues of the wire spooling but Theo’s is more for emergencies rather than permanent use.
