3rd brake light unstuck

Hi all. After a gorgeous weekend in the Highlands, en route back home I heard a bang and discovered the 3rd brake light had come unstuck and was hanging by the rear windscreen spray hose. The light connector had broken too. Diligently stopped, removed the part and covered in plastic to avoid water ingress.

On inspection, I noticed the part wasn't broken - I reconnected the wires and sprayer, removed as much old adhesive as I could with a knife and tried to stick it back on, but noticed it sits about half an inch back of where it's supposed to, creating a huge gap (see pic, forgive the white silicone stain, it's now been cleaned) with the tailgate. Pushing it forward doesnt really help.

Question for anyone who has (re)fitted a 3rd brake light before, have you had a similar issue? Or does it fit properly easily? I'm thinking of getting a new brake light assembly in case the old one got deformed somehow, but I don't really see how could have been the case.

Just got the new one, it seems the old one (OEM) was deformed, which explains why it wouldn't fit. Unsure why it happened.

New one fitted and all is now well... for now!

Well done, people generally struggle to get these off when they want to!

In my case it was done for me. I can only assume a faulty part or installation which made pop out on its own while driving.
