Discovery 3 2005 - Oil pump & belts (Help in Suffolk) |
|
Hi All,
Had a few issues over the Xmas break which managed to resolve, again by the help and advice of this great site!
However I ended up going down a Dicso3.co.uk and YouTube rabbit hole regarding the weakness I was unaware of with the old oil pumps....
So I got my Disco3 6-7 years ago as a Cat D and fixed up the minor damage myself and got her back on the road, at the same time I had the Timing Belt and the other 2 replaced at the same time.
1 year ago I took my Disco to a local chap to replace the belts again but he only did the Timing Belt.
Anyway... I'm waffling.. after my rabbit hole escapade I checked the paperwork and it seems the oil pump has never been changed with both timing belt changes... Now I'm paranoid
I'd like to get the belts done again and the oil pump at the same time however this is beyond my skillset.
I've had a ridiculous quote from the local LR dealer which I just cant justify to the missus as much as I love the truck and have invested so much time in her :S..
Is there anyone in the Suffolk area or willing to come here (I know its a big ask) to do this... I'm happy to do my bit to help but am no mechanic...
If so please send me a quote and your availability, as I'd love to keep the old girl on the road but cant afford to pay dealer prices or take it to chance that the pump may never fail..!!
Thanks in advance

Following on from this and reading this post https://disco3.co.uk/forum/rather-embarras...98799.html is it possible to remove the Fan and see the oil pump to check if its been replaced with a reinforced one before I go down the route of replacing and doing the belts again?
I brought the Disco with 84,000 miles on the clock so may be lucky and has been done..!?
As someone mentioned in that article above if is reinforced no longer required to change again as will last as long as the Engine will.. that right or should I just get it done anyway since I've had in 7 years and done 60k since having it?

Some have drilled a hole in the casing and used a rubber grommet to fill the hole, To remove the cover fully is about an hours job if you haver not done one before.
You need to remove the fan, the coolant pipes and all the aux belt pulleys.
There are from memory about 19 bolts to undo on the cover and two are hidden in a recess.

Thanks Flack shame I'm not closer to Preston be more than happy to pay to learn this maintenance process...
Any takers locally, happy to pay a realistic (non LR service centre) rate

It might be worth speaking to Alan at Alan Curtis Land Rover, he’s in Holton (near Halesworth). He might not be able to let you help but he’ll be a whole lot cheaper than any of the local LR dealers. Top quality work as well.
I want to see the sweets before I get into your windowless van... I'm not stupid!
