New oil filter concern
Hi all,
Just had some service bits arrive and a bit concerned about the oil filter as it doesn't have the normal hole in the nipple/stud on the bottom.
Does anyone know for sure whether this hole is required? I'm not sure if oil flows through it or if its just for locating the filter.

The nipple blocks an oil return, when you remove the filter it allows the oil in the housing to drain to the sump.Andrew

Many thanks, so it is not essential?
It did come as part of a premium filter kit but I haven't seen this particular brand or style before so still a bit tempted to buy another filter to be on the safe side.

The important bit is that the nipple fully seals the hole when fitted or you will have no oil pressure, that filter looks ok to me.
I personally only use genuine as i have had trouble with the fuel filters in the premium kits.Andrew

My understanding of the post is that the filter the OP was thinking of buying DOES NOT have the nipple hence his question.
I think the photo is not the one in questuon

You maybe right Sea Raider, I read that diffrently.
I have seen filters with a little dimple in the nipple and assumed thats what the OP was talking about.Andrew

The photo is a picture of the filter that arrived with my order, all my previous filters have had a hole in the nipple, so my concern was that this one does not.
The hole/dimple missing on the filter I have can be seen here.
I can check when I take my old filter out whether it is a hole or just a dimple, but it would make sense if this purpose of this peg/nipple is to block a drain hole in the housing, as when you unscrew the filter a couple of turns, it will lift the filter and unbung the drain hole, regardless of whether the filter has a hole/dimple.
Sorry its probably been a silly question, but as it's different to my previous filters I just wanted to triple check with it being a critical part.
Thanks again

Yes the one in the original picture is ok to use. The hole in the second picture will be a blind hole and may be there to save plastic or due to a different manufacturing technique.Andrew

My two spare MANN oil filters have the nipple with the blind hole.
