Largest tyre (diameter) I can fit in the spare wheel well |
|
Im looking to change my 255/50/20’s to 255/55/20 General AT3’s
I have managed to get a matching alloy, to swap out my rusting steel spare, is only 5% of the width in the increase diameter…but just checking!!
Think in theory its 12.5mm increase in total, so thats 6 say, 7mm each side.

I have a 255/55/20 Continental supposed run flat in the spare tyre bay.
Needed to be totally deflated and took a fair bit of positioning before winching up.
Lots of squeaky tyre on other substance noise as I winched....
Not had it down from there but expecting it to be a b1tch to get down.
Fits well so no problems there...

Ive wrestled a spare 265/65R18 in there but with only 15PSI of air Think i will need a tire iron to remove it and obviously have a small compressor to re-inflate

I think what you really need to ask is what the largest tyre diameter you can get in AND out of the spare tyre wheel well..... Getting it in with a winch is probably easier than getting it out without a winch.
As the above poster has mentioned, a compressor would be advisable if you deflate the spare by a large extent... Jim

255/55x20 with a a diameter of 31" fully inflated didn't fit, but 275/45x20 with a diameter of 29.7" does.
I would suggest a diameter of 30" would be about the max.
As said before, getting it up there with a tight squeeze is one thing, getting it down again is another, and also if it's a tight fit all round, they'll be no air circulation and moisture retention could cause all sorts of issues.

Thanks for the feedback gents.
The car is fitted with the 20’s and wanted to try and see what size would fit ideally without deflating, but thats an option.
As for “fooking”great tyres size, this one left the factory on 255/50/20’s, as a-lot of them did.
I was looking to slightly increase the hight of the sidewall to give a few more tyre options and the sightly better ability to drop the pressure if needed without sidewall pinching, if needed on soft footings. Without going to a smaller diameter rim to gain sidewall depth. It might be a option in the future if we manage head more southwards on our trips.
Ive had plenty of off road experience driving them across Europe and Russia in summer and Winter (-25!! Eek) To be honest the D4 on road tyres are incredible, but when it comes to heavy water fall, standing water, snow and slush, id rather the tyre take some of the responsibility than rely completely electronics. It staves off their interaction if you see what I mean. But you never know it all and everyday can be a school day.

I get what you are looking to try and why.
When I went from 255/50/20s to 255/55/20s for my summer tyre the ride quality was massively enhanced. Cornering was less noticeable and the car takes speedhumps and any road deformities better.
Whether I can easily remove the deflated spare from the spare wheel well if I need it remains to be seen but at least it is there for the AA to do if needs be...

I Have 255 55 20 GG AT3 on my D4 commercial and the spare (unused) is deflated to virtually nothing in order for it to fit. I keep a compressor on board to re-inflate.
If you can find a well used tyre for the spare then it may just fit.
I went to 55's for a smoother ride on the 20's. Stu

Haha, yes there is always the AA!!
In the end I can see me going to a rear carrier and 18” steels or 19” alloys but neither answer the space for full size spare. I see loads of people putting on the rack, but honestly Im not sure I could press one up there in the heat of the day, even 2 people it will be fun…getting it down..well gravity can handle that one!
My last overlander was a D2, so mounted on a lifted, strengthened rear door wheel carrier, getting the 16”rim and a oversized (taller!) KM2 could be fun. And Im no 7 stone weakling!!

I’m considering swapping my 19” alloys in for 17” steels with 265/70/17 AT3, anyone know whether a full size spare of that would fit? Not too keen on the spare wheel arm idea but not sure of what other options there are short of keeping a tube of gunk in the car
