Towing on slop

Hi all

Tried towing 3.5 tonne trailer few days ago on site that had a sloppy incline entrance. Mud ruts mode. Low range. 2nd gear. Winter tyres.

The car just couldn’t pull the weight it was sliding etc

Had to winch the lot out and give up.

I’m wondering was this just lack of knowledge or should I have been finding it easy to do?

Maybe off road tyres were the solution?

Or the car reached its limits in general?

The slope wasn’t very steep. Maybe 4 foot incline over a 4 meter long distance. Just very sloppy wet grass.

A good run wasn’t really an option as there was a slope to the left and a hotel wall at the bottom so had to go slow and have full control

Solution may be to add grass mats as requirement to customer for good access. Or off road tyres. Or my method of driving?

Thanks I’m advance

Plenty of stories about wet grass or 'Green Ice' as it's been called on here. One recently with car stuck at the bottom of the garden.
No, there really isn't much you can do. The discovery is at a disadvantage from the beginning, weighing nearly 3 tonnes.

Sounds like laws of physics took over. You could possibly have turned off the DSC to enable a little more power to get to the wheels, but it sounds like the limit of grip was met.

Agreed. When there’s no grip there’s no grip, to quote a wise old(ish) sage here. Thumbs Up

Green ice is the kiss of death. Once you break traction and cease forward momentum you need a plan "B". If there is a bit of wiggle room, more speed is the key. If it is tight or there is a cross fall that will see you on a gate post, winch/tow out is probably safest but doesn't mean you can't or won't slide sideways.

Waffle boards might be useful but can be awkward and weigh a ton when clogged with wet mud and grass.
Mud tyres might help but you need to be able to spin them up to keep the tread clear but even mud tyres won't guarantee escape, also, mud tyres on a wet road need to be treated with care. HTH.

Just for laughs, I know I wasn't towing a trailer but this was some of the deepest mud and ruts I've ever driven. This was my old RRC strutting it's stuff

It’s so much easier without any grass. Or mud. Whistle Whistle

DSL, you’re so right! I too miss the good old days of getting out and about on green lanes and the odd pay and play. Many lanes have been closed and others tro’d or restricted which is such a shame. But… the memories, nobody can take them away.

Winter tyres a definate no as they clog to quickly and I think the sidewalls are too stiff. But I would think muds with reduced pressure might even have struggled. Sounds like a ground anchor and winch job.

No magic tips here, but deflate tires as much as possible would be my choice
