Hi All - looking fo some help please,
Trying to install my new Altox GPS unit which has a giffgaff sim fitted. SIm was activated in a phone prior to installing in Altox and I made a call. Giffgaff sim comes with pin disabled and I also later disabled voicemail.
Unit connected in rear quarter easily enough and although my 2016MY already had time climate activated, I have activated remote in the CCF using my IID, selecting the Radio option based on forum searches here (although also tried Pager as this made more sense to me being telephone driven rather than key fob remote)
Unit has a steady amber light - no flash (this was true with pager as well as radio) - It should be flashing to be operative. This solid light suggests that the SIM is waiting on the network. Tried disconnecting and reconnecting, with sim in and with sim out but amber light is always solid. I also reinstalled in phone and the dozen or so messages I had tried to send to the Altox just came through immediately.
Issue does not seem to be the SIM but with the unit - any suggestions? Corris Grey SDV6 D4 2015 HSE

Hi,
I read nothing about what you did on the altox unit itself…. did you made a account on their website, to activate the altox itself?
Ps i have a SIM with Data installed, so use the internet connection, to take full advantage off the GPS and other graphical function of this marvelous Altox Best regards

Had a quick look to the altox manual regarding text and calls
And…. Given that it does not connect to the gsm network…. Where is your device located? Does it have “range” Mine is located in the dash, but under the frontscreen…
Maybe driving a little bit around to a better location regarding reception? Best regards

Hi Motolab - thanks for replying
Yes, I set up an account on Altox’s website and I have downloaded their app to my phone. I just cannot get the first text back from the device to get a unit ID so I can register the device.on their website.
I installed the unit in the rear quarter panel(jack storage) inside the boot using the Land Rover installed cable loom with a connecting Altox to LR cable. Pretty sure many on here are successfully using the same vehicle location and have no signal issues. Even with the unit removed from the cavity I have the same issue. As it happens I have direct line of sight to two mobile tower mast 300m away so I am permanently at full strength. So I don’t think its a lack of signal.
Will sleep on it and have another look in the morning. Thanks for taking the time to reply- Corris Grey SDV6 D4 2015 HSE

Sorry, just saw this. I assume I do this from the app but after I register the device? That’s teh stage I cant’t get to. I had read the manuals on the link you sent but nothing jumped out at me. Had a look on Altox’s own forum and it seems that a solid amber means the unit is not seeing the SIM Corris Grey SDV6 D4 2015 HSE

Solved !
After getting the above clue from the Altox Forum about the unit not seeing the SIM, I searched the internet to check the SIM orientation. In 3 of the attitudes I tried it the SIM popped up, in the 4th it stayed down. I thought I had it inserted correctly.
However when I checked a video on t’internet I realised I had it back to front but really needed to push it all the way into the unit. The SIM card needs to end up sub flush!
What an eejit!

Thanks to those who replied to offer assistance!
P.S. My device immediately launched into the previously reported Giffgaff glitch credit balance loop - there’s £3.70 I’ll never see again and can’t be arsed chasing giffgaff for Corris Grey SDV6 D4 2015 HSE

And what does the amber light do when you put in another SIM? From another company?
It should give you a direction Regarding a recieving problem or a SIM related problem
Ps, not every mobile tower mast does have antennas from every provider….
And they have also blind spots, always…
(As it happens, i use to work for A mobile company) Best regards
