The RAC left me at the side of the road for over 6 hours on Friday night before finally sending a truck out to move me to a service station. The contractor was a good bloke and had some decent tape, so we were able to patch the split hose with minutes so I could limp home. Otherwise I'd have likely been at Strensham services until the morning shift arrived. I was only an hour from home.
If at initial contact they had been upfront and honest I could have had SWMBO collect me and gone back later with a replacement hose. Doubtless they will blame COVID, but they were just as sh t the previous 2 times I called. Once I stayed with my car through the night as I was shifted from service station to service station. The previous occasion they had 2 days notice for the recovery and I ended up going home in a hire car and the Disco arrived 5 days later.
Which other companies are better? Even though I use Tesco vouchers to pay for the RAC, their service is useless.
The Gorilla tape used (not sure which exact one) did a very good job.

Watching this thread with interest as I had a similar experience. The RAC left me in the freezing cold with the family (2 kids) for 9 hours the other Saturday after the alternator failed. But that was only for the first leg of recovery where the contractor dumped us and the car at Watford Gap Services at midnight and left us to our own devices.
I spent hours on the phone to the RAC who eventually admitted they would not be recovering us that night and put is in a hotel in Rugby at 5am. The next day they then continued to fail to cover themselves in glory - we eventually got home 28 hours after the initial call and the car didn't arrive until 24 hours after that having done 3 additional hops to various service stations (each time with the contractor phoning me up to ask where I'd left the car and the keys - "no idea mate, ask the previous contractor who left it there yesterday" - the RAC didn't know either so I ended up co-ordinating between the subcontractors to locate the vehicle and the keys. Thankfully I have a tracker on the car so was able to see where it was at all times.)
Suffice it so say I am in the process of drafting my complaint to the RAC Chief Exec but will definitely be looking for an alternative.
Cheers
Mark

Don’t want to tempt fate, but never had this sort of issue with green flag, even when needing the car and caravan recovering.

I've never had a good experience with the RAC. We are now with Green Flag. Only used them once but they seem to be better.2004 Disco 3 HSE TDV6

That's interesting.
2 of the contractors told me that of the 3 main companies they sub-contract to (AA, RAC, GF), GF were by far and away the best.
I had a three-hour wait at the side of the M4 when an injector on the Volvo gave out. The RAC chap gave me the options of a) him taking us to a garage for the part to be replaced and the RAC paying £100 towards it or, b) waiting four hours for a recovery truck.
Ever since then I've had e-mails asking if I want to join the RAC?

Green Flag for over a decade here. Only had to call them a couple of times, but each time they were excellent and either got us going again or got us home. Based on what I've read about RAC/AA, you couldn't pay me to call them...

Just out of interest, how is the LR recovery service? My vehicle is still under Original LR warranty so I still have the LR SOS system.
Has anyone had to use it?

unless its changed LR assist work hand in hand with AA
personally im with green flag and have been for the last 5/6 years, only had to use them once (ive done it now!) and the contractor was excellent, even if his truck wasnt rated to carry the D4 but it was only going a couple of miles on the back at that point of the journey, they switched it the next morning to a bigger truck and took it back to the dealer 25 miles away with no problem.
about 10 years ago RAC left me and my 2 very young kids for 4 hours in sub zero temperatures after a gearbox failure on my D2, never subscribed to them again.2011 D4 XS 305 MY12 - gone but not forgotten

Breakdown Cover
Green Flag for me for more years than I can remember - used then two or three times over the period and they have never kept me waiting or let me down.
