Any suggestion for winter tyres?

Evening all

I did post this in an earlier topic but realise it would get lost in there.

So any help would be gratefully appreciated. I have a spare set of 18” rims for my D3 which I would like to stick a chunky winter set on that won’t require any mods to the car. Picture of the rims attached, but any advice on what to order would be great. I have a set of 20” nice summer rims and tyres, so this is to make it look a bit more off roadie but still be able to ride on the motorway.

Thanks all, really appreciate it!

General Grabber AT3 have worked very well for me up here in Scotland, but you’ll end up with as many answers as there are tyres (and then some) Laughing

Available in 255/60/18 so you’ll keep the same rolling radius as your 20s

As Nige says you can expect many answers Laughing

But why Chunky Question it depends what you want them to do as Winter tyres for grip in cold icy conditions is about sipes not chunks, look out for the mountain peaks and snow flake marking

Nokian WR SUV 3.

Excellent traction in snow, even deep stuff!

I've always been really impressed by the Vredestein Wintracs and Nokian WR3.
Saying that, I've got Pirelli Scorpion All-Seasons on for this winter so will see how they do, late this month by the look of it! Wink

Can’t wait for my first winter in the Far North Highlands with a Disco. The old quattro Audi A4 was unstoppable (in a good way) on the road, the replacement AWD Insignia is reasonably disappointing but not incapable, the AWD is currently only for the first few minutes due to a haldex issue, but it’s usually enough to reach a treated road.

Edit: Just remembered (read: been out to look), They both wore/wear Falken Ziex. Brilliant all season through winter for a medium sized car.

The D3 came on wintery winter tyres (not even all seasons), and has been a bit “floppy” through the heat of summer, so I’m hoping it all comes in to being when the temperature finally drops. Assuming I can get the TCCM replaced and working soon…. Then come spring I’ll treat it to some all seasons, if it’s behaving itself…. Laughing

Goodyear Duratracs - I got these due to the reviews for snow, although they are an aggressive all-terrain first, winter second. They are snow rated though.

I haven't got personal experience with them in the snow yet, but they're apparently better than BFG All terrains which were fantastic on my Ranger.

Pirelli Scorpion All Terrain Plus also awesome in the snow... no trouble even in the deep stuff high in the Alpes.

For proper winter tyres, as opposed to all seasons, we have Conti T850s (I think) fitted to Skippy’s winter wheel set. We’ve used Conti winters for 10 years now on one of our Jazzez and they have been superb, the car drives like it was in tarmac when it was really on sheet black ice. Similarly with Skippy, took her to a car park that was a very slick skating rink and drove around it like it was summer. OK, Skippy’s a 4x4 version so I don’t know how much of that was putting drive to all 4 corners but I thinks the tyres were much more important as otherwise I’d have had all 4 wheel spinning. Absolutely superb and wouldn’t have anything else.

PS Conti TS850Ps. No idea if available in D3/4 sizes though. Also don’t just think about the Disco, think about what your SignifOther is driving. Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

I've got Conti Winters on the SL.

Old pic so not the current D3, or the Contis probably, but......
The Contis are very good and nearly always come out top, or close, in the tests, but I don't know if they're in D3/4 sizes and don't have experience with them on SUV so difficult to recommend.

If you get stuck in the snow in the SL it is accepted whereas if you get caught out in a D3 it will take a LONG time to live down! Wink

I love these tires on every vehicle I've put them on. Not only do they stick to the road like a velcro cat, they wear well and work as an all season and off road tire. Sometimes they are tough to find, but worth the effort.

We couldn't find them for the present LR3 under the time constraints we had so we ended up with Bridgestone Blizzaks. Everybody seems to love their Blizzaks but I'm not impressed, compared to the Ipikes they are not nearly as sticky.

I’m putting my Coninental winters back on tomorrow. They seem pretty good, not that we’ve had any seriously wintry weather in the last couple of years.
