Wierd rattle when starting, especially when cold??
Hi, i wondered if anyone had any suggestions or help on this?
When starting my disco I get a wierd rattle for the first 1 or 2 revolutions before the engine actually runs, moreso when it is cold. Excuse the terminology but it almosts sounds like the engine is confused as it starts. I am due to get the belts done early decemeber but i wondered if this is something that anyone else has had this and it was anything simple or sinister, in which case should i try and fast track the belts being done?
it is 73k miles and has had a FSH but not knowing what this particular noise is i tohught i would see if any of the more experienced guys on here would be able to share any knowledge?
(I did search for the issue but couldn't see anything come up exactly linking to my issue - its not the EGR tick as this is removed and all blanked and there is nothing mechanial or covers etc that are loose, it is a sound definately coming from the engine.)

Check that a heat shield has not come loose. Try the rear ones next to the prop shaft. Had a similar problem which went away as the revs increased. The holes holding the shields elongate over time and become loose hence the rattle. When fixed I.e heat shield consigned to the dustbin the car had done about 75000 miles.Once you have defeated the idiots any job is half done. Pity there are so many idiots to defeat.

Yep ok i will do - i was thinking it sounds more of a metallic engine noise than just a heat shield but thats for your tip, i will have a good look later at the heat shields.

hydrolic cam followers they rattle on startup, supposed to do it tells you in the hand book and does it more when the oil is nice and new (assuming its the right spec)
to confirm stand by the drivers side wheel and get someone to start it when its cold, personally i would be more concerned if it didn't rattle at startup when coldplease excuse any grammer/punctuation mistakes,i'm thick, thankyou

Hydraulic tappets should not rattle unless they are shagged!
What does rattle on D3 as they age is the camchain tensioners, which have a light spring to hold them in tension, but the engine oil pressure is what keeps them in tension.
So a light tinkling/rattle for a second or two after starting is quite normal, it is not corect but it is common,.
I would hazard a guess that eventually the tensioners will fail, but then mine has been tinkling on start up for the best part of 7 years!
But I do not think this is your noise as you say the noise happens before the engine starts, and if you can hear the camchain rattling beofre you sart you could be in trouble.

The handbook is wrong if it says rattling cam followers is normal, and rattling timing chains as a result of poor oil pressure/worn tensioners is not normal engine behaviour either.
And, if they rattle for anymore than 3 or 4 seconds you should be worried as the above is a major contributor to their snapping. yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ

This just goes to show that men dont read the instruction manual, they incl me all think you are wrong, but we are to lazy/disinterested to bother looking
But if you post which page/section it is in I may take a look out of curio?
