Steering wheel judder at low speeds/revs |
|
I am hoping someone may be able to shed some light on an issue with the steering I am having.
When stationary and at very low speeds (low revs), when turning the steering wheel through approx. half lock either way (but more apparent to the right), there is a judder through the steering wheel. It only seems evident at certain points and then goes once passing that point. It doesnt seem as obvious with higher revs.
The only recent work that the car has had is the replacement of the front arm lower rear bushes (poly).
Tyre pressures and tracking are all good (having read through other steering issues - although this seems to be only low speeds that I can feel). I am hoping it does not require a new power steering pump.
Any possible enlightenment welcome.

Does this happen on all road surfaces?
It might be something as simple as the feeling of tyre slip as you're turning it whilst static. The new poly bushes will certainly exacerbate the feeling as the poly material is very hard - I was warned against using poly in favour of good old fashioned rubber. Poly sends all the shocks up through the arms.
If its not something so simple, I wonder whether the steering column bushes need replacement - can the steering wheel rotate back and forth without movement of the vehicle when in motion? 2022 BMW i4 M50. Bought Oct 2022. 10,200 miles and counting...

Mine does something similar and I also had poly bushes fitted on the front lower arms early this year.
I had been wondering about it but this would explain it. 2008 D3 HSE Stornoway Grey (UK)

It happens on all surfaces.
Its just odd that it is only at certain steering wheel positions.
I was wondering if it was something that had always been there but had been masked by the older bushes.
